THE GENERAL HUE AND CRY.
FROM THE POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY, JUNE 2, 1830.
ESCAPED, from the Garden of the “Euryalus” Hulk, at Upnor, Chatham, on Monday Afternoon, the 31st ultimo, GEORGE ROONEY, born at Bedford, in the County of Bedford, aged 15 Years, light brown Hair, hazel Eyes, brown Eye-Lashes, common Nose and Mouth, of florid Complexion, Sun-freckled, a Scar on his Forehead, oval Visage, a Mark on the left Arm, four Feet 8 Inches high, and well made; he is supposed to have had on a grey Jacket and Waistcoat, the former marked "570" with white Paint; a striped cotton Shirt, with his Name painted in red Letters; duck Trousers, marked "570" with red Paint; and a black leather Cap. He was convicted at the Sessions at Newington, in Surrey, on the Ninth of January, 1827, of stealing from the Person, and ordered to be transported for 7 Years. It has been ascertained that he went away with a red worsted Cap on his Head, and that he had on an old speckled Guernsey Frock, and a Pair of brown cloth Trousers. He is well known in the Neighbourhood of Kent-street, Southwark, and was convicted in the Name of his Father-in Law, who is a Turner, and lives in Red-cross Court. The Boys real name is GEORGE WOODEN, or WOODING.—Twenty Pounds Reward on Conviction.

Young George probably got his Life Sentence as punishment for escaping. The honourable judge must have been in a generous mood, he could probably have had him hung. On 9th October, 1830, he departed England on the Convict ship “John” for Van Diemen's Land. It looks like he may have got a ticket-of-leave in 1839, a conditional pardon in 1843, narrowly avoided being locked up for stealing in 1844, and hopefully lived happily ever after.

And presumably "just a commoner" with that common nose and mouth - what does an uncommon nose and mouth look like?
