McFadyen Family of Kilfinan Argyll

Post by janist » Wed May 18, 2011 12:28 am

Hi!

I'm trying to find information on my Great Grandmother Violet McFadyen & her family. I know she was born in Kilfinan, Argyll around 1851-55. I have found her on the 1881 & 1891 Scotland Census. Her parents are Isabella Mc Ewan born 9/7/1819 in Kilfinan & Hugh McFadyen ( not sure but I think 1823 in Strachur, Argyll). Hugh was a gunpowder maker so I think he worked at the Millhouse Gunpowder Factory.
She married John Duncan Smith on 25/11/1881 in Blair's Ferry, Kilfinan, Argyll. I think they had 4 children as 3 (George, Bella & John) are listed on 1891 Census & 1 other (Alexander) was the informant on her death certificate. I have a copy of birth certificate for George but nothing for the rest of the children.
Hope I have provided enough information & hope you can help in some way.
Cheers,
Janis

Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Janis,

I'm not quite sure what kind of information you're looking for as you obviously know quite a bit about the family.

Are you trying to go forwards or backwards? :D

Here is Hugh and family in 1871 at Blan's Ferry, Kilfinan (as transcribed) (Violet is working away from home).

Hugh Mcfadyen 49 born Strachur
Isabella Mcfadyen 52 born Kilfinan
Jean Mcfadyen 16
John Mcfadyen 14
Christina Mcfadyen 11
Archd Mcfadyen 9
Isabella Mcfadyen 6

Here is Violet in 1901 at Airy Cottage, Kilfinan -

Violet Smith 42 Pauper
George Smith 18 Coachman
Alex Smith 12 Scholar

A search at SP shows a likely death for Isabella in 1890. There is death entry in 1914 for a Hugh McFadyen at Kilfinan. Have you found your Hugh in 1911?

Regards,
Annette
