scotlands people ?

Post by garydevine1995 » Wed May 25, 2011 12:45 am

when do you get to access births after 1910 marriages after 1940 and deaths after 1960 because i have a lot of certs to find but i cant get them because they arent showing them yet and iw as wondering do you need to wait long for them. like every year does scotlands people open another 10 years or another 5 years. i know with the census you need to wait every 100 years beacuase of privacy issues but i was just wondering when you would be able to access the above. :D

Hi Gary,

ScotlandsPeople can show certificates online for deaths more than 50 years ago, marriages more than 75 years ago and births more than 100 years ago. Each year, another year's worth of these certificates go online, this always maintaining the 50, 75 and 100 years of privacy respectively.

To see the newer certificates, you need to go to the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh, or the Glasgow Genealogy Centre (recently moved into the Mitchell Library). In these places you can view certificates up to those issued about a year ago for births, marriages or deaths. The 50, 75 and 100 years privacy is not applied in these facilities. You cannot print out the certificates there that are newer than 50, 75 or 100 years, but you are free to view the information and write it in your notebook (or type it into your computer). Prints for the older certificates can be made for a fee.

If your plan is to go to one of these research facilities, make yourself a list of all of the items you wish to find. If you just go and search randomly it is less likely you will get your money's worth. As you pay to enter these facilities and can view as many as you can find the time to do there need be no further costs incurred there if you are not printing out any documents.

See http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/sc ... tions.html

Note:
ScotlandsPeople Centre website wrote: 2.4 Unaccompanied children of age 14 or 15 will be allowed to carry out a search in the search rooms only if they can show written consent from their parent or legal guardian and can provide a contact number for the parent or legal guardian.
2.5 Proof of age may be requested for customers appearing to be underage to carry out a search of the records.
All the best,

AndrewP

thanks Andrew

You are always a great help, so is the mitchell library just like the scotlands people building then like you can access all the exact same records because i was going to make a trip into edinburgh next friday but if they have the same records in glasgow as they do in edinburgh it will probably save me a bit of money on travel and would be much better considering i am just a 3 miles away form glasgow ?

Hi Gary,

Hopefully one of our TalkingScot members here who has been to the Glasgow Genealogy Centre in The Mitchell will be able to confirm that for you.

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... ogyCentre/

As it is a smaller facility, it looks to be wise to book your place in advance.

My belief if that the Glasgow Genealogy Centre is linked to the ScotlandsPeople Centre computer system, so should be able to offer the full range of birth, marriage and death certificates (1855 to 2009/2010; index to 2011), censuses (1841 to 1911 - same as online), and OPRs (to 1854). It may have the other records - wills & testaments and coats of arms. It looks like the Scottish Catholic Archive records that are on the ScotlandsPeople website are not available in the ScotlandsPeople Centre yet.

You have been a great help,i think i will take a trip to Glasgow instead of Edinburgh as it is more conveniant, and they are more or less equivelant to the records that are in Edinburgh.

Thank You :D :D

Hi Gary,

When you get to the Glasgow Centre, I would advise you to go well prepared with as exact dates for BMD's as you can narrow down.

The searches are 'by year' and although you can very easily go up or down, there's no +/- facility.

If for example, you were looking for the birth of a John Brown somewhere between 1880 - 1900, your search would produce hundreds of results!

Not all the computers have the 1911 Census but you would be asked on arrival/induction if this is something you'd want to look at. I don't think Wills and Testaments etc., are available and I know (at least up until a few weeks ago) the Catholic Records definately aren't.

An A4 print-out costs 50p, so don't get carried away (says she who ended up with LOADS!!) - it can make your trip pretty expensive once you add up all the costs!

You don't have to try and remember 'cut-off' dates - there's a wee icon on the computer which shows you whether or not a certificate can be printed when you view the image on the screen, so whatever you do, make sure you're equipped with a notepad!!

thanks Anne

i will keep that in mind, luckly i dont need to look up any catholic records at the moment as i am finished with the catholic side of the family :D i think without the +/- i would probably struggle to find the right person. so there is advantages and disadvantages hahah as always but thanks very much Anne. :D

Gary,

Try and get a space for a Tuesday because the archives are open till 8pm and, at the risk of repeating myself :D, I'm sure you will find lots of info on many of your ancestors in the poorhouse applications.

Use your time 9.30 - 4 at the Genealogy Centre and concentrate on looking and transcribing the records there. Then when you finish at 4pm go to the archives one floor down and search the poorhouse index. The archivists will help you get started. You can then note the record numbers of the applications that are relevant. If you are able to request them before 4.30pm they will be brought to you that evening. If you are too late (or cannot make it on a Tuesday) then you can request them for another day and they will be ready for you when you arrive.

A bit further down the line they are hoping to have an archivist at the Genealogy Centre who will organise requests and bring them upstairs but that won't be for a long time.

Regards,
Annette
