Murdoch MacKenzie was born about 1895, probably in Scotland (but I've tried everywhere else available).
In 1924 he married Lily MacKenzie (born about 1897) in Glasgow. He was recorded as a Merchant Seaman.
At the time of marriage Murdoch's parents were named as Kenneth, a Seaman (deceased) and Mary MacDonald. Problem is I have been through every birth of Murdo* MacKenzies five years either side of 1895 and couldn't even find a near match. Can't find him in 1901 or 1911. Can find marriages of Kenneth MacKenzies to Mary MacDonalds but have tracked all possibles - no Murdochs.
Now to Lily MacKenzie!!!! (Lil' MaHeadaches more like) Parents named as John MacKenzie a Seaman (deceased) and Annie Jane MacLean.
No possible Glasgow (or anywhere else) births of Lily MacKenzie 5 years either side of 1897. No marriages of John MacKenzie a Seaman (deceased) and Annie Jane MacLean (until 1903). No possible Lily MacKenzie in 1901.
However, in 1911 there is a Lily McKenzie of the right age listed as the daughter of 69 year old widow Jessie McKenzie at 6 Brown Street. At the same address is a SINGLE domestic servant Ann Jane McLean 35 born Dunoon.
In 1901 at 6 Brown Street there is a Lily McLean (right age), boarding at 6 Brown Street. Head of House Jessie McKenzie 60 year old widow.
In 1897 there is an illegitimate birth of Lily MacLean at 6 Brown Street. Mother, Annie a domestic servant.
In 1901 there are only two Ann McLeans in Glasgow of the right-ish age, in the right-ish area both domestic servants, neither born in Argyll but one is staying at the same address as given on the 1903 marriage cert to John MacKenzie. However, neither 1901 Ann McLeans can be found in their supposed places of birth at anywhere close to the supposed years of birth.
For various reasons far too complex to go into, I'm VERY sure that Annie MacLean DID marry John MacKenzie in 1903. I'm fairly sure that Ann Jane McLean in 1911 at 6 Brown Street was Lily McKenzie's mother but despite the parents being named on Annie's marriage as Donald MacLean and Margaret MacDonald, I can't find ANY likely births under McLean or illegitimate MacDonald names in the 1882 - 1888 period.
I've traced back Widow Jessie McKenzie and there is no relationship to any John that I can find.
Anything I've missed ? Or any suggestions to verify Murdoch and Annie Jane and their parents.
Cheers,
Andy

Re: Anyone up for a challenge?
Hi Andy,
A likely looking family at 3 Mackenzie Street, Stornoway in 1901 -
Kenneth Mackenzie 50 Seaman, born Gairloch
Mary Ann Mackenzie 42
Bessie Mackenzie 14
Kenneth M Mackenzie 12
Margaret Mackenzie 9
Murdo Mackenzie 7 born Stornoway
Henry Mackenzie 4
Kenneth Macdonald 80 Father in Law born Barvas
I've put Lily in my poorhouse look up book.
BTW Shouldn't you be looking for Annie Jane born around 1876 and not the 1880s.
There is an Anne McLean age 13, born Dunoon at a Catholic Orphanage at Calton, Glasgow in 1891 and an Annie J age 25, born Argyllshire working as a domestic servant at Rothesay in 1901.
Regards,
Annette

Just careless typing should have been 1872 - 1878
