Where is High Culmalzie.Anyone?
Hi,general question - Has anyone heard of High Culmalzie in Wigtownshire.I've punched this into the PC and nothing comes up.
Small 2nd question - What was/is a workers house. Is it an alternative name for a workhouse or poorhouse?? Ta, Keith.

Hi Keith
Best wishes
Lesley
Can you tell us where you saw mention of this placename? Context is the main clue to solving these kinda things!!Hi,general question - Has anyone heard of High Culmalzie in Wigtownshire.I've punched this into the PC and nothing comes up.
Again, as above - can you give us this in the context in which you found it please? Type of work and place and date. It may refer to something like a workers cottage, somewhere perhaps supplied by the place of work at low or no rental costs perhaps? But without the context, that is just a guess...Small 2nd question - What was/is a workers house. Is it an alternative name for a workhouse or poorhouse?? Ta, Keith.
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: Where is High Culmalzie.Anyone?
There's a farmhouse called Culmalzie in Wigtonshire, at the junction of the B7005 and the B7052 roads. [roughly South East of the town of Wigton about half way across]
A look at some old maps show that it was there in the 1880's and a Malzie and a Malzie Bridge were nearby [Malzie may be a burn or stream]
As Lesley has said, an idea of context and time scale will help us narrow it down.

Re: Where is High Culmalzie.Anyone?
Apologies everyone.I have a tendency to think that everyone reading/replying to my post/s are from the geographical area which I am researching.Do women have this problem?
Some great comments,I think we've almost gotten there.
RE; High Culmalzie.I think someone posted that it was a small townland in the parish of Kirkinner, and I now believe they are correct. As for the Workers house,I think you are correct in assuming that it was probably a workers cottage, which would be rented or lived in by employees of possibly "Culmalzie" Farm.My one track mind had it down as a village or town.
A great bit of investigation by all concerned. Thanks for replies, Keith.

Hi Dogwistler, I do live in area you are talking about, their are a lot of farms with Malzie in their name [pronounced mally]. They take their name from the Mallie/Malzie Water, on a map of 1782 you can find Cubmalzie, Culmalzie, Malzie and Low Malzie, all arround the Malzie Bridge over the Malzie water, farther down the road is Corsemalzie a large victorian house rerplacing an earlier house, If you type in Corsemalzie house hotel you should get a photograph of it, If I can be of any help , grave stones etc let me know, I only live 5/6 miles from the Corsemalie house Hotel,

Re: Where is High Culmalzie.Anyone?
Geat stuff, Spacot.Threre was me pronouncing it with a ZI .Not much different from N.I.though.There's a place over here called Lisnaskea, and visitors always pronounce it wrongly,eg. Liz naskia. The correct pronunciation is - Liss na ski.The same goes for the Belvoir estate in Belfast, correct pronunciation - Beaver.
I'm unsure if any of my lot are buried in the Culmalzie area, but is Culmalzie indeed, in Kirkinner. If so ,is there a place called Kerenwanch.I only ask,as my GGG was living there on the day of his marriage (Bann). It also comes up zero on the PC.
If I need any help with graves etc,I will contact you. Thanks for the offer by the way. Ta, K.

There is a Kirwaugh and Kirwaugh Moor to the east of Culmalzie. Older maps say Kirwauch or Kirkwalk.
Do have a look yourself at http://maps.nls.uk
[John Thomson's atlas or the OS 1 inch series] and compare to the OS version on Bing maps.

Re: Where is High Culmalzie.Anyone?
You've done it again,Spacot! That,is most definitely the place I was looking for.The original certificate is handwritten, but has been deciphered ,wrongly,by another person.I read the original as Kirinwauch, but someone had transcribed it as Kerenwanch, which I took to be the correct spelling.
I had a look at the OS county map of E.Kirkinner, and I must say,it is a great lasting legacy to the cartographer.Immense detail and very easy to read.So much so,that I have bookmarked it for future use.
Yet another job well done.Spacot.Thanks, K.
