Hi all,
Can anybody find Thomas Mooney, born 1868 at Lochee to James Mooney and Eliza Mahood, after the 1881 census. I have been able to follow the rest of the family through BMDs and census records but Thomas seems to disappear off the face of the earth.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Thomas Mooney 1868
Hi Annette,
Had a look around for Thomas using Mooney, Money, Mulne, Moon etc as surname without much luck. There are four marriage possibilites but all are in Dundee. There is also a Mooney Family tree on Ancestry which you have probably seen.
Had this same thing happen in my Munro family. One brother dropped out of sight in 1876 and another in 1883 along with his three children. Finally found the first one by way ANESFHS. He had moved to South Africa. Never have found the second brother or any of his three children anywhere. Good thing I already had gray hair when I started this research!

DeceasedOnline has a burial for Thomas Moonie, Feb. 14, 1895, Liff Churchyard. Might be worth a look!

Thanks Carol - I had a check at the SP index and it looks like this Thomas was born around 1887.speleobat2 wrote:DeceasedOnline has a burial for Thomas Moonie, Feb. 14, 1895, Liff Churchyard. Might be worth a look!

Re: Thomas Mooney 1868
Hi Annette
Just to add - I have done much searching without success - thought I found him as a Moonie - but the age was wrong - I think it was the 1891 census & the Thomas for whom Carol found the burial. I've looked at US England and Canada census & immigration. I may have found a possible going to Queensland - will have to check - they don't have the images online - but if it's a possibility I can visit the archives to check.
MOONEY Thomas 16 Duke of Buccleuch 6 Nov 1883 IMM/118 421 Z1961 M1699 - aged 16 in 1883 - is born c. 1867 I think.

Is Australia part of your theory?

Re: Thomas Mooney 1868
Hello Annette,
I’ve been tracking a Thomas Mooney, mill-worker, who lived at Albert Street, Lochee. He seems to have spent much of his spare time during the 80s at the Dundee Police Court. Among his victims were his wife’s parents, Thomas lynch and Catherine Welsh. In 1895 he assaulted his wife with a knife and according to her they had been married sixteen years and had seven surviving children out of eleven. It doesn’t look like him. He doesn’t seem to have spent too much time in the lock-up.
In the Dundee Courier & Argus, Friday, May 13, 1887, there’s a missing Dundee steamer ‘Carmona’ with a Thomas Mooney, fireman, Liverpool, among the crew.

Re: Thomas Mooney 1868
Trish,
It's a possibility - I had a look at the census records at Ancestry and in 1901 there is a Thomas Mooney, Fireman, born Glasgow living at Barrhead but I can't see him before that.
But................looking at Alan's post I wonder if that one died when the ship went down!
Alan,
A search at Ancestry shows that Thomas Mooney was born in 1858. Glad it isn't the one I'm looking for - he sounds a right unsavoury character!
Thank you both for looking - my bizarre theory is that he is a completely different person in 1891 but now I'm not so sure - I'll see if I can find out more about the Carmona.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Thomas Mooney 1868
Hi Annette
I have researched 3 people who changed their name - one was just a surname change & involved a complete family - I found that one on the English Census - the other two - were as you say - bizarre - and other family researchers found them - I don't know how they did it! Both were found via Australian WWI records - which are very comprehensive. Many people who change their name, for whatever reason - keep the same day and month for their birthday - they may change the year if they are trying to add confusion - or are putting their age up/down to be eligible for war service. They also often use a name that has some relationship to their birth name - so as not to confuse themselves. My favorite name changer, took his father's given name & used his own given name as his surname.
I think your theory is quite possible. I'm not sure when I'll get to the archives - it's on the opposite side of town to where I live, but I do visit every month or two - so I will check the Thomas I found - probably just to exclude him, but worth checking.
