" A grand old man "

Post by frances » Thu Sep 29, 2011 4:23 pm

I had the great pleasure :D to chat to a man yesterday who has reached the ripe old age of 94. Still driving, using a computer and to my delight I found out that he is passionate about family history .

In the course of our conversation he mentioned that he has always (without any success) tried to find out about his Great grand father William Bisset born 1820 in Inverkeithing.I had a look on SP for him and found a birth in Inverkeithing 31st December 1820 of a William Byset.

What Mr **** really would like to find out is what happened to William after his birth in 1820 till he is ennumerated in the 1841 Census at Wood Mill Bothy, Dunfermline.

We have found him in the 1851 and 1861 census , his marriage certificate to Margaret Kinghorn and his Death Certificate in 1893.

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to look to find more about William's life ?

Best Wishes to all in the TS family

Kind Regards

Frances :)

Hello Frances,

Does it make any mention on the 1841 & 1851 census records that he's a soldier? There is an 8-page record for a William Bisset, a labourer by trade, born in Inverkating (sic), Hillend, Fife. He was attested for the 60th Royal Riffles at Dumfermiline, Fife on 28th October 1836 at what looks like 21yrs. 7/12 mths...so born a bit earlier than 1820. He had a few problems...just drunkeness and misconduct, and was in confinement several times, one being from July to 26 Oct 1840 then rejoined 27 Oct to 1844 (could have had leave). In and out a few more times and rejoined again May 1851 (dates are a bit off for May). Looks like he had a medical discharge in 1853.

Added later...
Probably not the one you're looking for. I looked more closely at the documents and note that his intended place of residence was K. W. Town (King Williams Town), British Kaffraria where he was apparentlty stationed at the time as there is also a note on the side stating 'This man wishes to be discharged & remain on this frontier'.

There is also another William Bisset born to William Bisset & Elizabeth Oliphant on 31 Oct 1813 and was christened Collessie, Fife on 07 Nov 1813 so it could have been this William who eventually relocated to Inverkeithing.

Regards,
Anne H

Thanks all,

According to the 1851 Census he was a Millmaster at Meldrums Mill. The 1861 shows him as a Millmaster at Scottsmill, Inverkeithing.

Hello Frances,

Just a few scraps.

In this 1862 Fife Directory there’s Bisset, W., (Corn & Flour) Meldrum Mill, You’ll find Bisset, John (Corn) Scotsmill on page 114.
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=5SM ... 22&f=false

In 1866 there’s the same info for William. On page 90 there’s Bisset, John, Flour & Corn Miller, Inverkeithing Mill and Scotsmill.

The 1861 Directory has been transcribed here.

There’s a bit of info about the family here, although it’s pretty old.
