News Archive lookup Please

Post by trish58 » Mon Oct 03, 2011 12:29 am

Would some one kindly look for a Coroner/Inquest or news paper report on William Haining/Hanning. I have his death certificate from SP and also the RCE which states "Cause of death" Shock resulting from injuries received at Newton Stewart Railway Station Death 6 Dec 1881.

Thanks-Trish

Hello Trish,

I was tearing my hair out over this one, then suddenly, there it was in The Scotsman, 7 December, 1881, page 7. I’ve photobucketed it so you can grab a copy of the article. http://i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad28 ... aining.jpg

NEWTON-STEWART—MAN KILLED.— On Monday evening a porter named William Haining, in crossing the line at Newton-Stewart station, was knocked down by a goods train and fell between the rails. The train, consisting of two engines and about forty
waggons, passed over him before he could be rescued. When taken up it was found that he had sustained severe injuries, and he died about two o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased had been long in the company's service, and was very popular with the travelling public. He leaves a widow and nine children, three only of whom are grown up. He was about fifty years of age.

All the best,
Alan

Unfortunately the newspaper report is possibly as much as is available. In Scotland there is no Coroners system as there is in England or countries whose legal system can be traced back to a basis in English law.

In Scotland the responsibility for the investigation of a death falls to the Procurator Fiscal for the area (in modern times the investigation side is undertaken by the police) although in some circumstances there may be a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) held. These inquiries are rare, even today only 50-60 are held annually.Generally they are held only when legislation requires it (e.g. various employment Acts) or more generally where "it is deemed in the public interest" - although the latter can cover any number of reasons. (Fatal Accident and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976)

William Haining was my ggggrandfather, tragic demise indeed I recently managed to buy an ancient (seriously moldy and falling apart) 1st edition of the book of poetry that his death is immortalized in. I would love to hear from anyone else who has a connection to this family. I also have a copy of his last will and testament which reveals more information about his widow Helen Kennedy.
