Home Weddings
Just wondering how common home weddings where? I have a couple who where married at 30 Forbes Street, Aberdeen in 1860 which is the home address of the bride. The marriage was conducted by a minister of the Free Church. Was this unusual or common practice?

Re: Home Weddings
Hello Andrew,
It was more common for couples to be married at the bride's home than anywhere else.
Church weddings are 'reasonably' recent.

Hi Andrew
This practice was common in marriages within the Free Church...it had been established only 17 years earlier, and held most of its services in the houses of its adherents.

Re: Home Weddings
The two most common places for weddings (certainly in the presbyterian churches) used to be the brides home or the ministers home. The use of church buildings for weddings didn't become common until the mid 20th century

Thank you! I have a grandmother and many others who were married at "The Manse". I had mistakenly thought this was a wedding hall, or hired venue. Now I realize it was the pastor's home.
