Isn't that the site where you had to pay to just read there? I really enjoyed it until it seemed we had to pay for everything, so I stopped going there. A shame because it was very helpful in the beginning.

I think you had to subscribe for them to look up anything.
Find that there are several sites disappearing these days.Wonder what the cause is :!:

Hi Maureen

I think that some sites were set up by enthusiasts like ourselves but they were charging for information to maintain their site. We have never done that, relying on other kind folk to do some digging for them. Our income to support the TS site is limited and comes from the Tombola every year. Instead of having a personal financial involvement in the site, we have Admin and Moderators drawn from across the world whose only concern is to help others. This is reflected in the wholehearted support we have from ordinary members who are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to help each other. When I get too old and dottery to be of any use as an Admin there are loads of other members willing and able to take over. For FUN not profit. I think that some of the smaller sites have been swallowed up or forced out by the commercial sites. At least the commercial sites are honest about it. They set their prices at a level which maintains and improves their access to records. We don't have those costs.

There is also a greater commitment of time to running a site like this than most people realize until they try to do it themselves. Our administrators and moderators are always there for us and we all need to stop and think about what that entails in taking up their time!

I for one am very grateful to everybody behind the scenes who keep this site up and running so smoothly! =D>

Thanks to all of you!

The ScotFamTree forum is more like a secret society than a forum. Maybe the secret answer as to why the site is still down is hidden behind this brick wall. http://scotfamtree.b1.jcink.com/

It seems to be something to do with migration of servers and they are being given the run around. There are a few early comments on the Forumer forum from 8 October. http://fhq.forumer.com/new-platform-gen ... urs-4.html

Thanks, Carol :D
What is taking most of our time these days is checking out and then deleting spam members... we get hordes of them every day now that we are accessible by the search engine bots :( No time any more to do the fun stuff like help people with their genealogy questions! That's why it's good we have members like you who are willing to help out-- thanks to you too!!

[cheers]

You are so right, Sarah. We do owe a great deal to the Mods and the members who are so willing to contribute whenever and however they can. Thanks!

I haven't posted or helped on here for a while due to ill health, but I feel the need to speak out in defence of the scotfamtree forum. I've found a thread which previously mentioned them.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14112

I know that there normal forum is offline because there forum is moving, in fact I know this for definite because I have many friends who are subscription members on there. They ARE a non profit making forum and I can't believe how scathing people on this forum can be about other geneology websites? And I think member momat has received help from them? I am a free member on there and do a lot of lurking on there, on here and other forums but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I see this kind of behaviour from like minded people. Smacks of the green eyed monster. I don't like it and I'd like my name removed from here please.

:x :x :x :x "I did not make any scathing remarks regarding the
other site
so I think the comment made by fionamurray was unwarranted.I think you should read the posting again
If a site is MOVING they should inform those listed as members to this effect. Not just disappear!!
