Hi glennhadden
Have you any idea when or where he died? If it was in Scotland and after 1855, his death entry should give the names of his parents...if the death informant knew the names. Do you know where he was in 1861? Or his wife?

Best wishes
Lesley

I only know that he died between 1851 1861 , his wife is listed as a widow in 1861 Census , but I can not find any info about him past 1851 ;-(

Hi glenhadden,

The 1855 death certificate for their 18 year old daughter Margaret gives you some of the information that you are seeking. It narrows down the range of years for her father's death. It can be found on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. 1855 Scottish certificates are considered as a bonus, as that was the first year of civil registration in Scotland, and more information is on an 1855 certificate than any other year.

Margaret, Joseph's widow outlived him by over 40 years. Her death can be found registered and indexed on ScotlandsPeople as HANDASYDE, or TASSIE.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi glenhadden,

A closer look at that death certificate, shows that Joseph Handyside was deceased at the time of that death. So assuming that information to be correct you have his death down to 1851 to 1855. As there is no sign of a death certificate for him, and you found him in the 1851 census, you can narrow his death down to some time between 30th March 1851 and (probably) 31st December 1854. Unless you can find a monumental inscription for him, or any poor application by his widow may have made you may never find a more accurate death date form him.

All the best,

AndrewP
