Turnbull Portioner

Post by pat rutter » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:27 am

Could anybody help me?

Benjamin Turnbull, born Sprouston 8 Dec 1765, died 7 June 1833, buried Ramshorn cemetery, Glasgow. He was a portioner, which I understand was a laird of a small estate or such.
Is there any archive I can approach, to find out about this?

I'm not from Scotland, so cannot visit personally.

Best wishes

Hi Pat
I had read your request on Urban Glasgow, I'm not a member there so I'm very glad you found your way here :D

The link above gives the following info:
0517 The property of John Turnbull, merchant Glasgow, sacred to the memory of his father Benjamin Turnbull, portioner Glasgow, who died on the 7th June 1833(?) aged 70 years and of his mother Grizel(?) Steel who died on the 12th January 1848(?) aged 74 years also his brother William Turnbull who died 9th August 1820 aged 26(?) years.
Unfortunately Benjamin died before the census records start, but his widow should show up on the 1841 census, that may yield some clue as to where they lived. Have you any information on John himself?

Searching on Scotland's people website will give you the Parish record of Benjamin's death - have you looked at that? it too may give more information.

Pat, The Ramshorn Kirkyard was where the merchants were buried, so he was obviously not skint! Grizel is Grace.

According to an 1841 Census transcription ......

Living at Edinburgh Road, Barony Parish Glasgow
Grizzel Turnbull, age 55, born c1786, Lanarkshire, Occupation: Ind. (Independant?)
Andrew Turnbull, age 30, born c1811, Lanarkshire, Occupation: Cotton Hand Loom Weaver
William Turnbull, age 15, born c1826, Lanarkshire, Occupation CL? (same as above?)
John Turnbull, age 10, born c1831, Lanarkshire, Occupation: Draw Boy
Benjamin Turnbull, age 8, born c1833, Lanarkshire.

By 1851, Benjamin age 17 looks as though he might be the following (although if his family had money...., maybe not?!):

Living at West Bennan, Kilmory, Bute
Benjamin Turnbull, age 17, born c1834, Glasgow, Occupation: Servant/Farm Labourer.

No sign of a Grace/Grizzel Turnbull in Glasgow matching the 1841 info.
