Turley/Torley Family Help Needed
Are any other records available to enable me to I find my ancestors Stephen and Agnes birth and marriage details?
My Turley/Torley family starts with Stephen Turley who married Agnes Logan where about unknown. On the Census Agnes Turley (Widow Tourly) is living in Airdrie and was born in Ireland. Stephen must have therefore died before 1841.
Agnes Turley died in1859 at New Monkland aged 82. She was a widow of a weaver; her son Thomas witnessed the death.
Stephen and Agnes Logan I believe had the following children.
Stephen Turley born 1807 Airdrie, left army due to illness in 1836 died before 1841, occupation weaver. All this information is from his Army records. I have assumed he is mine as every family since has had Stephen as their first male child
Thomas Torley born 3 April 1810 parents Stephen Torley and Nancy Rogan at Glasgow, St Andrews obtained from the Catholic Records. After leaving the Army he became a weaver. On his death certificate in 1872 at Airdrie his father was Stephen Turley and mother Agnes Logan.
Andrew Turley born abt 1812 birth place Airdrie according to Census. His occupation was a cotton weaver and his death certificate states father Stephen Turley, mother unknown. (My direct ancestor)
James Torley born 26 February 1817 parents Stephen Torley and Agnes Rogan at Glasgow St Andrews obtained from the Catholic Records. No record of his death found.

Hi Maggie,
Since some of the children were born in Glasgow, have you checked to see if the family appears on the poor relief records there? Especially if Stephen died when the children were still small, maybe Agnes applied for relief. Always the chance that the marriage info will be included.
All the best,
Sarah
P.S. Never mind... I realized just when I posted that of course the records don't go that far back. I'll leave this message since you'll get a notification of it anyway

Re: Turley/Torley Family Help Needed
One of my ancestors is a Stephen Turleay wife unknown- this appears on his son Andrew's death certificate in 1877. This Andrew Turley was born around 1816 in Newmonklands Airdrie and married Agnes Pollock (her father was Daniel Pollock) Blacksmith. Their children were Andrew, Stephen, Isabella,Daniel (who was found drowned on the Bothwell side of Blantyre Suspension Bridge in 1883), Agnes, Ann, Mary born 1858 died 1861, Mary born 1861 died unknown date and Thomas. Does this help?

Hi Glencroft
Its good to meet another person researching the Turley family. I have all the that information and much more about the family. How are you connected to the Turley Clan?
My grandfather was Daniels brother Stephen (his twin brother William also drowned). All my family lived in Lesmahagow and I was also born there.
The following is the articl;e about Daniels death Glasgow Herald, Monday, April 9, 1883
BLANTYRE.--BODY IDENTIFIED.--The body found in the Clyde, near the Suspension Bridge, at Blantyre works, has been identified as that of Daniel Turley, miner, Kirkfieldbank, Lesmahagow. Deceased, who was 30 years of age and unmarried, had been spending the night of Saturday, 17th February, in Lanark, and he was last seen about half-past twelve on the morning of Sunday the 18th the worse for drink in Kirkfieldbank, which is near to the Clyde.

Re: Turley/Torley Family Help Needed
Hi Maggie
Stephen Turley was my great grandfather married to Annie Fell, my grandmother was Annie Fell Turley born 1895 married to Robert Reid my mother was Annie Fell Reid married to Sam Donald she was born in Lesmahagow in 1915 My middle name is Turley and I was born in Uddingston. I have been researching the maternal side of my family for a while and yesterday managed to get on to the talking Scot site I had been at the Mitchell Library a couple of years ago to find out about Daniel but it was so difficult to read the Glasgow Herald item, however I managed to get an image of his death certificate from Scotlands People. I did not know that Stephen was a twin as his birth was pre 1855 before the statutory records began and the OPR records seem to be sparse- twins seem to run in the family, my first pregnancy was twin unfortunately they did not survive but my youngest brother has twin boys who are now aged 27.
Family names: Donald, Reid, Turley, Fell, McKenzie Yeaman

Re: Turley/Torley Family Help Needed
Hi Glencroft
I have confused you with the wrong generation, the twins were born on 23 April 1880 ie your Annie Fell Turleys older brothers. There were 2 articles about Daniels drowning in the Glasgow Herald this information is on the following link to an earlier post of mine.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15844.
I have been in touch with descendants of Daniel Turley born 8 April 1883 and they live in Australia as does my sister Mary . Have you got the date when Annie Fell Reid nee Turley died <after 1961> as I am trying to build a complete family tree?
If you would like copies of the famiy tree and other information send me a PM.
Regards
Maggie and Peter

Re: Turley/Torley Family Help Needed
Hi Maggie and Peter
My grandmother Annie Fell Turley died in Cleland Hospital Cleland Lanarkshire on 10 May 1975. As to my research I have fair bit of information but a few gaps so any information would be great. I have a copy of the marriage banns of Alexander Yeaman and Ann McKenzie for 1814, a cousin tells me that he was born in Eastern Europe do you have any information regarding this?
Can you tell me what a PM is?
regards
Anne Comrie

HI Anne
A PM is a Personal Message. If you look at any of Maggie's posts under her name on the right hand side there is a button with PM on it. You can use it to send personal or private information to Maggie or to exchange e-mail addresses. There is a similar button on Peter's posts. It's a very handy way of exchanging things like marriage dates etc. which would otherwise be outside our acceptable dates.
