Anyone know if there is a record of the Private Secretaries who served this British Prime Minister?
I've just been going through some old notes and a 2 x great uncle told me that a member of our family was Gladstone's private secretary. Everything is worth checking out

Thank you, Anne.
Nothing leaps out at the moment but you never know what will make sense in the future.

You could also check the London Gazette. His appointment may have be reported there as this is the official newspaper for reporting such events.

So with a lot of help from a fellow family history enthusiast I was able to discover that the gentleman concerned was one Walter Thorburn, Member of Parliament for the United Counties of Peebles and Selkirk.
Probably never was Gladstone's private secretary but there's always a grain of truth in that old family tale passed down the generations
