Coming soon on ScotlandsPeople

Post by AndrewP » Tue Mar 27, 2012 7:48 pm

Hi All,

ScotlandsPeople are soon to release a new set of records on their website - Valuation Rolls. The first year to be released will be 1915, with others to follow later, as detailed below.
ScotlandsPeople website wrote:Coming Soon! Valuation Rolls for Scotland in 1915
The ScotlandsPeople Team is currently adding the Valuation Rolls (VRs) in Scotland for 1915 to the website.

Compiled annually, the VRs comprise standard records for landed property from 1855 to 1989, with separate rolls for each county and burgh. Starting with the 1915 records, our plan is to release the rolls for every tenth year back to 1855 and every fifth year forward to 1955. The VRs will be fully searchable, and you will be able to search by surname, first name, county and/or parish.

We will announce the launch of the Valuation Rolls for 1915 in the next email newsletter.

Hi Andrew,
I think I got an email from SP on that recently. It will be great to have yet another avenue to explore at the click of a button! =D>

Wish they'd add something from the opposite end of the scale too - the index to the poor law records (from the database at the Mitchell) alone would be phenomenal.

The 1915 valuation rolls are available now on ScotlandsPeople. The cost is the usual 1 credit for the search, and 2 credits to view the results. The 2 credit rate is an introductory offer: see http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... ?r=554&409 .

Some info regarding the VRs can be found at:

And FAQs at:

I just downloaded my first four images from SP. Can't beat the price at 2 credits per image!

Took a while to save and even longer to open but opened from my viewed images after the third try.

I already new the addresses and who lived where but it's nice to see the additional information as to ownership and yearly rent/value.

I like the Larbert ones best...they're all nicely typed (and the family there had more money) so additional information feu duty.

I'm happy! =D>

Hi Anne,

Note that the rental shown is not necessarily the rent paid by the tenant. See http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... .aspx?2123 for more info.

Hi Andrew,

I seem to be having problems opening images and now the link you've given me for SP.

I do realize the amount is probably 'market value' sort of thing.

Just like the tax assessors when I used to own my own home. They value the property and raise property taxes. [rant]

Regards,
Anne

:D :D Thought I'd have a look & see what my Great-Grandparents were paying in rent in 1915(18s) Chuffed to see further down the page my other Great-Grandmother & she is the tenant -right address where my Great-Uncle enlisted for WW1 the following year.So know this would have been one of their "separations"
although the property is owned by my great-grandfather's employers. So they did live apart pre 1916(my Great-Uncle enlisted under-age & on his third attempt my great-grandpa didn't haul him back)I often wondered if this was the reason behind their many separations but the reasons are probably as I have been able to surmise from recollections from my Great-Aunts & a lot of delving amongst the Archives at the Mitchell/Glasgow University for the Hospital archives..So sad as it was due in part to an incident outwith their control & the Valuation Roll has strengthened my belief in my "theory".
Chuffed I got two for the price of one! And at the introductory price.
One question can you search under address? Oh and it is quite a social history as I recognise some of the names on their too as per future spouses of my family.
Researching:SCOTT,Taylor,Young,VEITCH LINLEY,MIDLOTHIAN
WADDELL,ROSS,TORRANCE,GOVAN/DALMUIR/Clackmanannshire
CARR/LEITCH-Scotland,Ireland(County Donegal)
LINLEY/VEITCH-SASK.Canada
ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.

The 1913/14 valuation rolls for Glasgow are on the Glasgow Story site [ for free]
http://www.theglasgowstory.com/valindex.php

it is searchable by street.

I've found them quite informative , so it's good to have them for the rest of the country too.

But if you know the address in the city - I'd look there first ;)
