I’d long ago heard the story of the five Sullivan brothers who died when the USS Juneau was sunk during WW2, but hadn’t known that the poor mother got the news second-hand and wrote to the Navy Department for confirmation. http://www.lettersofnote.com/2009/09/it ... -navy.html
The movie “Saving Private Ryan” was based on the regulations introduced following this tragedy.
