Hi
I have Christening details written on the back of a Birth Certificate from 1931
It looks like Emmanuel No 1, 148( not sure about the middle number) Wallace St; C5.
Signature Thos. Todd
Does anybody have any information on this establishment?

Re: Emmanuel Church, Glasgow
Hello Susan,
I have a couple of original Scottish birth certificates from the 1870s where the Free Church minister has written baptism details on the back. On one the child’s mother’s signature was next to the minister’s. On the other the mother’s adult baptism was recorded on the back of her child’s birth certificate. I wonder how common that was.
I couldn’t find anything about a Thomas Todd or Wallace Street connection to any Emmanuel Church.
There’s a reference here to a marriage in 1923 at Emmanuel Church, Glasgow, after forms of the Free Church of England. They didn’t mention the minister’s name. Maybe that would be worth a look. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.ph ... 462.0.html
Going back a bit, in the Glasgow Herald, in 1898, there’s an exchange of letters regarding origins and legitimacy of that particular church. It was also described as the “Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Free Church of England), Croft Street, Camlachie”, The then incumbent was James W. Hodgkinson.
In the 1911 Glasgow Directory, page 1773, middle of column 2, there’s the Emmanuel Church at Duke Street, Parkhead. http://archive.org/stream/postofficeann ... 2/mode/2up
They seem to have moved around and maybe on to Wallace Street, but just guessing.
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Here’s the 1927 directory page for Wallace Street, there’s a Todd at No. 179. Maybe that was the minister’s residence rather than the church. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ss1083.jpg
The religious institutions are listed in the appendix at the bottom from page 171. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... x-glas.htm

Hi Alan
Thanks for your help and the many links.
I will keep searching on this one.
The Birth Certificate is actually my dads & he wondered about the christening.
I know my grandparents were different religions so it sounds like some sort of Gospel Hall maybe?
Will let you know if I have any luck.
Thanks
Susan

Hi Susan
The Gospel Mission address is 198 Wallace Street. Pastor Thomas Todd was there in 1939 when he conducted and witnessed my partners Grandparents marriage. The building is in the area of Tradeston and still exists - I don't live too far but have still to go down. Can take a photo for you of you want? I was asked to start from that information and find out what happened to his Grandfather whose last known address was in 1951. I'm new to searching but was so pleased to finally find some other link to the same wee mission hall. I was told that the Gospel Mission was not affiliated to any denomination so finding out who has the church records is proving a little tricky and I received another e mail saying there were an abundance of mission halls in Tradeston, Kinning Park and Cessnock.
If you come across a James Hardie from that Mission in your search I'd appreciate the information.

Hi
Thanks for the info on the Gospel Mission and Thomas Todd.
I had a quick look on Scotlandspeople for your James Hardie and there is a possible death in 1973 registered at Glasgow Martha St;
There is also a wedding of an Agnes McGill Hardie to an Iain Sinclair Macdonald in 1972 at Glasgow (Park Circus).
I would say a visit to Mitchell Library would be your best bet where you can access the same records as Scotlands People but for a fixed fee per day.

There was an Emmanuel Church in Croft Street at Camlachie in the East End of Glasgow
