Hello from Canada with questions

Post by gwennypenny » Tue Jul 03, 2012 3:18 pm

#-o well I dont know how to go about all this . I joined a free trial of ancestry UK and also scottish gov site and bought credits. I have found my mothers mother but thats all, meaning it shows nothing else, just a death date, doesnt give her parents names or a sibling. I know my parents names and THEIR parents names thats all, nothing else. I have a coupole dates of death.I have used 6 credits and learned nothing. I had thought perhaps in my mind, that if i found a death date for the grandmother it would list anyone else with her, or somehting. I guess I thought it worked differnt. I wanted to know if my grandparents had siblings, those siblings would have kids ...and then more kids, (now my age of 40 or so).
I have no family to help me, and i am in canada to boot so far across the miles of scotland. I am not sure where to turn to now.ancestry UK is a free trial and has shown me nothing at all.so I will cancel.the other one I lost the credits searching as it only showed a name, nothing else. ](*,)

i often wondered as my parents would have had cousins...who had kids...who had kids...

Hi Gwennypenny
I replied on one of your other posts but hadn't realised that you wanted to widen your search. Have you tried looking at the 1911 Census. That way you might link other family members which would give you other leads to follow.

If sounds as if you have only paid to see the index, not the actual death entry, on the assumption that the death occurred after 1855? Did you use the ScotlandsPeople site? Did you view the image?

Try a read of the following articles and see if that explains any more about the ScotlandsPeople site and how to go about working back generation by generation...
Scotland is probaby the best county in the world to begin your family reserach as the Birth, Marriage and Death (BMD) & census records are easily available online and the cost of viewing these documents is probably the best value you will find (when compared to the cost for similar documents in countries such as England, Australia etc...)

Getting Started

Searching Statutory Records

How to view an image

Best wishes

thanks to you both. I think I did it wrong, I paid for people who were after the date . so I didnt view anything as there was nothing to view. So I am learning along the way. I have since had a wee bit of help and paid 5 credits to view a marriage certificate which gave me 4 more names, now I will try to look for those 4 people now .I find it all very fascinating but very difficult ](*,)

Hi Gwenpenny
Don't worry too much about it being difficult at the present. Believe me, we have all been there, none of us started our own searches and suddenly woke up the next day knowing everything, what to look for and how. It has all cost us credits on wild goose chases, myself, I was on a search for one of my grandfathers and after going down a line and spending quite a few credits, realised it was the wrong man I was chasing.
But just remember, there are lots of people on TS willing to help you if you need it. Some will guide you, some will give you a lead, and the odd one may help even more.
[cheers]
Stewie

Searching for: Anderson, Balks, Barton, Courtney, Davidson, Downie, Dunlop, Edward, Flucker, Galloway, Graham, Guthrie, Higgins, Laurie, Mathieson, McLean, McLuckie, Miln, Nielson, Payne, Phillips, Porterfield, Stewart, Watson

Hi gwenpenny,

To augment the knowledge of TS members, I would also add that if you can find a local Family History Society, it is worthwhile joining, they are normally staffed by volunteers with years of knowledge and expertise, and in Canada there will be a lot looking at Scottish records no doubt.

Though unlike here in Scotland, in Canada, local may be hundreds of miles away rather then the 7miles I have to Glasgow, in which case feel free to ignore this advice :D

Hi Gwenpenny:

The St. Catharines Public Library has free in-library access to Ancestry Worldwide. The funds were specifically provided for that service by The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and is administered by OLS-N and SOLS.

Although ScotlandsPeople still is the primary source for Scots records, you will be able to search and perhaps narrow down the choices on Ancestry first.
