Hi Chrissey,

Have you sent away for those certificates, the one from Gourock and the one from Greenock?

Hi Chrissey,

In the later part of the 19th century and the earlier part of the 20th century it was not uncommon for two birth registrations where the birth happened away from home (often at the mother's mother's house for a first birth). The birth would be registered in the district where the birth took place, and that would be transcribed in the district where the family normally lived. In the furthest right column on one of them it should say transcribed from original registration in the other district.

All the best,

AndrewP

Chrissie,

It must have something to do with the hospital at Larkfield Rd. I was born in that hospital and my birth was registered in Gourock, and my parents lived in Greenock. My grandmother died in that hospital in 1935 and her death was registered in Gourock, although she lived in Greenock. The address of the hospital is Greenock, but it's kind of on the border of Greenock and Gourock.

I must go check now and see if I was also registered in Greenock. No I was not registered in Greenock.

Ina

PS what part of Greenock did your folks live in. I knew some Boyd's from Greenock..........used to date one of them LOL

A death search at SP inserting just the name Jane with a birth year of 1929 +/- 1 year and mother's maiden name Lafferty brings up 2 results in 1993 at Greenock. I would imagine they are the same person which makes me wonder if it could be your Jane as perhaps she was registered under both her birth name and adopted name.

I'm sorry I have no credits to look but for 1 credit you should be able to see all names for this lady and take it from there.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Chrissie,

Doe's the name Simpson or Gillen mean anything to you? The two deaths that Annette found registered in 1993 in Greenock, I believe are one and the same, only one has the maiden name as Simpson and the other as Gillen. They have the same GROS number 640/00 0338.

Where are you located Chrissie? If you went to the Greenock Registry office they would let you have a look at both of them.

Regards,

Ina

Later - Chrissy, there are two births registered for a Jane Boyd in 1929, one in Greenock and one in Gourock. Since your granny married James Boyd in 1918 I would assume that Jane, born in 1929 would have been named Boyd. Wasn't it a rule that the wife's husband was assumed the father and his name had to be on the birth certificate? I know that I have one where the mother insisted that her husband's name not be included LOL.........the stories we learn while doing genealogy LOL.
