Wisharts Buildings, Yoker

Post by alistairmac » Tue Aug 14, 2012 4:50 pm

Hi there,

I discovered your excellent forum at the weekend via a link on the SP site.

According to my father's birth record he was born in 1906 at 20 Wishart's Buildings, Yoker. The family was still at that address on the 1911 census. I've looked at old and new maps, but can't find them. Does anyone know which street Wisharts Buildings were on? Also, does anyone know of any sites showing old pictures of Yoker?

Cheers
Alistair

Hello Alistair and [TS_welcome]
You've come to the right place! But I'm not the right person... So we'll wait until one of our members who knows the area comes along. In the meantime, there are a few photos of Yoker on the Glasgow Story website if you do a search: http://www.theglasgowstory.com/index.php

All the best,
Sarah

Hello and welcome to TS Alistair :D

Are there no streets listed at all on the 1911 census - is everybody's address on the page 'Wishart's Buildings'? They may well have stayed there in 1901 - do you want to give us names and ages and we can check?

Not much but you can find a couple of photos of the area at http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualm ... tlciI7fQ==

Yoker was also involved in The Blitz so you might find something of interest here.

I found a 1905 map of Yoker on the NLS site, at that stage there really wasn't much in the way of housing in the place.
Nothing named specifically as Wisharts, a few biggish named houses -Manse, school etc. The bulk of the buildings marked seem to be on the Dunbarton /Glasgow road [A814] there are still some tenements along that way [often a block of tenements would have been given a name, like Wisharts, and that woud be marked as the address on the stonework] but I can't see anything obvious.

Looking at the census page may give further clues, or going back to SP and getting the 'header page' should give a better idea of the actual location.
Then we can get scouring the maps to try to find it.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks very much for quick responses. I'll check out the links.

Everyone on the 1911 census page has the same address, ie 20 Wishart's Buildings. The other families on the page are:

William Dougall 45 (Iron Driller) and his wife Agnes (36) and 5 children.
Isabella Sneddon 41 (husband not listed) and 7 children.
William Sinclair 35 (Rivetter), his wife Elizabeth 34 and 1 child
Alexander Thomson 36 (Baker), his wife Sarah 31 and 1 child
John Friel 31 (Ships Plater), his wife Isabella 26 and 2 children

All the families are in 2 rooms apart from the Sneddons who are in 3.

At the top of the page the Civil Parish and Parish Ward is listed as Renfrew Yoker and Renfrew South. School Board District is Renfrew Landward. Thanks for the header page idea Wilma, if these names don't yield any clues, I'll contact SP.

Thanks again for your help
Alistair

Alistair,

The header page can be viewed free - go to your viewed images and you'll see a link to it there. I had thought of that too but on checking a couple of my own there are no street names listed as in the older census records.

Annette

Here is the information from the header page (forward 1).
  • DESCRIPTION OF BOUNDARIES OF ENUMERATION DISTRICT

From Corner of Yoker Road (South Side) and Ferry Road, proceed eastward along south side of Yoker Road to a point opposite Garscadden Road, thence southward to River Clyde, thence west along middle of said river to a point opposite Ferry Road, thence north along east side of Ferry Road to place of commencement.

LIST OF ROADS, STREETS, COURTS, &c., IN ENUMERATION DISTRICT

Ferry Road, East side from River Clyde to Yoker Road, Rossdhu Place and Wishart's Buildings, Engineering Works, Bull's Metal Works and Yoker Road south side between Ferry Road and point opposite Garscadden Road.
See how that fits the maps.

[Later] See map http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-2nd-and-lat ... d=75650358. This seems to be a fairly small area with few houses in it. The area is a short distance NW of the centre of the map, on the north shore of the River Clyde.

And also http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch-2nd-and-la ... 2=85448456 - near the SE corner of this map.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

That's it, brilliant. Thanks very much, I hadn't thought of checking the header.

The next step is to try and work out where my grandfather was working. He is listed on the census form as an Electric Crane Driver in the Boilermaking industry. So he may have been working in the engineering works, if they were boilermakers.

Thanks again everyone! [cheers]

The area hasn't changed much since those maps, still few houses. The big tenement building at the corner of Yoker & Ferry road is still there [now Yoker Ferry Road and Dumbarton Road] the railwayline is now just waste ground.
