SP order image.

Post by Anniespangles » Wed Dec 12, 2012 9:13 pm

When you search on SP and you discover you have to pay to see an image...why is this and if you go to the Mitchell Libary or to Edinburgh can you get to see the images there without spending £12 a piece?

For people like me who live in the states and can't get to the Mitchell or NRH the 7 pounds for 30 credits is relatively cheap.

Once you pay the 'entry' fee (now £15.00 in Glasgow), you can view everything 'free', but if you want to print out a copy, each page costs (from memory) a further 50p unless the events are 'more recent' and if that's the case, although you can transcribe all the details, the same guidelines apply as do on SP meaning you can't get copies.

By using the SP site, you can always go back, search through everything you have viewed/downloaded and it doesn't cost - if you have printed copies from either Glasgow or Edinburgh and you lose them, you don't a copy of the image 'stored' unless you were to scan each certificate and save them that way.

I was recently at the gene centre in the Mitchell library as everything I wanted was 'recent', so had to do a power of transcribing. All went well and apart from having 'writers cramp', I was pretty pleased until I returned to the car to discover a parking ticket, so my wee outing ended up costing me a fortune!

My own fault of course - Being a country bumkin, I forgot that in the big city you have to remember to feed the meters!

I will they hold poor house records for 1900- 1940? Iam still finding my feet and learning new research skills in all of this but I am LOVING IT!

Although all the sources you probably want to look at are 'housed' within the Mitchell, they are in separate departments.

The genealogy centre (3rd floor) is the 'mini' equivalent to Scotland's People - birth/marriage/death/census IMAGES, where you pay an 'entry' fee and usually a seat has to be booked in advance.

Also on this floor are (amongst many other things) the valuation rolls and microfilms containing parish record b/m/d's (pre-1855) which you just help yourself to. Burial records (microfilms) are also kept here but these have to be requested from a member of staff.

The 2nd floor is where Glasgow City Archives are. Poor records, etc. (best to look at the Archives page on the website to see what's available there). The newspaper microfilms are also on this floor, which again, you just help yourself to. As for school records (which will be in the Archives), I don't know exactly what they have, but if no info is on their page, you could send them an e-mail to enquire.

It would probably be a good idea to make as comprehensive a list as you can, then check to see what the best options are and if you're still not sure - just ask and I'm sure we can try and keep you right.

You would only have to pay the £12 on SP if the birth marriage or death was outwith the cut-off dates. (100 years for births, 75 for marriages, 50 for deaths). Otherwise, if the event is older than these dates you can download a copy of the image for a few credits (cost: about £1.20)
Best wishes
