Needing help this morning... Margaret Skinner nee Porterfiel

Post by Anniespangles » Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:54 pm

Hello everyone,This morning I have been trying to find out more about my great great aunt, Margaret Skinner nee Porterfield. She was born on the 19th December 1886 to parents Robert and Margaret Porterfield (nee McGregor) in Dumbarton.Maggie as she was known to family married Henry Skinner a marine engineer on the 27th of September 1912.Sadly on July 7th 1913 Maggie lost her baby son also named Henry to congenital syphlis age 1 week from 4 Dumbarton Rd Old kIlpatrick. Now for the life of me I can't find anymore on her ,no death certificate nothing,is it likely she died from Syphlis too?I also cannot find a DC for her husband Henry Skinner who was 31 in 1912 and a bachelor when they married.I have a lovely photo of Maggie holding my Great aunt May in 1910.She looks so happy holding her baby niece,I think she would have been a lovely Mum and a great help to my Great grandmother Annie Porterfield (Maggies sister in law) .The Porterfields and the Skinners were neighbours at 129 High St Dumbarton,Iam guessing thats how Maggie and Henry met,he was 6 yrs older than her.So can anyone please help me with Maggies DC or where to look. Thanks x

Hi
There is an entry on Scotlands People where the surnames (and age) are not quite as you have posted (Porter not Porterfield), but it is also far too recent to post details. Given that it is within the 50 years closure period you will not be able to view it either, so no way of knowing if it is the person you are searching for or not. One of those to put on your "maybe" list perhaps unless someone else can come up with a better suggestion - are there no close family members who may be able to give you some clues?

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley.I think Maggie will have died more than 50yrs ago, just a feeling.I know about her brother my great granddad and about her sister Agnes and her husband Alan McPherson but there has been a hush when it comes to Maggie. The only reason I know of her is thanks to a photo that was given to me with regards to the baby in it who was my great aunt May .Its the writing on the back that confirms her name .I just woke up this morning and thoughf I am going to put some flesh on the bones of the girl in the picture,Now I know what happened at the birth of her son,I am wondering if that s the reason we know very little about her and her husband. If she died pre 1915 then it might answer a theory I have about my Great grandmums state of mind.Would going to the Mitchell Library help?

There is a death entry indexed at SP for a Henry Skinner of the right age in 1940. If you look at that it should tell you if Margaret was alive or not then.

Annette

Hi

I have your Margaret Porterfield among my mother-in-law's family, through her mother Margaret McGregor whose father was Charles McGregor married to Margaret McArthur. Margaret McArthur was a 2x great aunt of my mother-in-law. I am off to do some research at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow on Wednesday 9th January and will make time to have a look for the Death Certificates that are of interest, if that would help.
Best wishes for a Happy New Year
