Hi...I am new to this website and have only just caught up with postings from 2011 regarding "clandestine marriages"
My own John Scott married (were confirmed in their married state) an Elizabeth Hood at Eckford,19 Dec 1790 and were "rebuked" for having been in such a marriage. They had to give a shilling to the poor for this transgression.
I was wondering if anyone may be related to this couple? If they are they may like to know that both John and Elizabeth died in Wales.

Re: clandestine marriages
Hello again Roger
Now I am wondering if the "cousin" might be relevant!
I have a George Scott b. 1760 marrying Isabel Haitlie and having 2 known children: William b. 1786 Parish of Bowden and Robert b. 1789 P. of Bowden. Robert Scott b. 1789 m. Isabella Wight b. abt. 1791 and their son, George Scott b. abt 1810 married Cecilia Cockburn b. 1815, Eckford. Cecilia's sister, Christian b. 1803 Eckford m. Thomas Tait b. abt. 1791. Their elder son was William b. 1828 Eckford whose eldest son was Thomas Tait b. Eckfor 1859, became a gamekeeper and went to work for a number of years in ---Wales. I always wondered how he got there and maybe your ancestor holds the key to the mystery!
If you think there is any tie up, feel free to contact me through this site by private message if you wish.
Regards
Lorna

Re: clandestine marriages
Hi Lorna....thanks for the reply to my query.Well....the names you mention are familiar but I cannot connect any of them with my lot.
My John Scott/Elizabeth Hood family had the following children:
Margaret at Caverton/Eckford 1791
Andrew at Yetholm 1794
Jane at Yetholm in 1797
John at Yetholm in 1799
The father,John was described first as a "Wright" and later as a Carpenter. (Woodwright??)
The entire family moved to Wales (Cardiganshire but a stone's throw from the Radnorshire border near Rhayader)
The front page of the Rhayader Parish Register has an inscription that reads John Scott,Sept 22,1761 with a bit of graffiti but no indication of what the date really is or when it was written. No Scott events appear in it either.
Margaret married in Wales first in 1814.All died in Wales except Andrew in Milwaukee,Wisc, USA.(Lots of relatives there)
I know that many Scots did move to Wales as Gillies etc and even James Watt of steam engine fame bought land
close by in Radnorshire about 1824/28.
It doesn't sound as if the Scott line is connected but the Taits may be a different story.A John Scott married a Margaret Tait,14 July 1793.
Having said all that see Kirk Yetholm Parish Register note: "John Scott,Robert Scott and Margaret Tait all from Eckford moved to Yetholm,2 Aug (my birthday) 1794"
If you want any more info on these people perhaps you could give me an e-mail address.Mine is cousinroger-insert the at symbol here-hotmail.com

Re: clandestine marriages
Hello Roger
I have sent you a pm. Sorry not to get back to you sooner but I didn't get an email alert and was away a couple of days. Interested in what you say re gillies/ gamekeepers going to Wales for work. Another of my Tait gamekeepers spent much of his working life in Kent while the one who went to Wales ended up in Invergarry. Perhaps people visiting estates to shoot or fish would offer jobs to likely candidates.
I am a Tait and my farthest back verified Tait was William TAIT b. 1743 in Eckford. My Taits have Caverton connections too. I shall be in touch again soon.
Regards

Re: clandestine marriages
Thanks for the reply Lorna...no problem with slow replies.I am not in any hurry and I don't check the website very often.
I think the main reason the Gillies and/or Gamekeeper types went to Wales was that they worked for the big land owners south of the border on the big estates.I think they were trusted more than the locals to work hard and do a good honest job.I have seen many Scottish surnames in Radnorshire PRs (my bailiwick) The Gibson-Watt family at Doldowlod House just outside Rhayader,RAD are descended from Watt the steam man I think. The family still also owns property near Lessudden House too I think.
Sounds as if the Taits may have a connection to my Scotts somehow but you are closer to the Registers than I am.
I can send you a gedcom of what I have on my Scott/Hood people if you think there may be a connection.Let me know.
All for now....Roger
