Looking to hire professional Scottish Genealogist

Post by Susanna » Mon Jan 14, 2013 12:26 am

Hello, wondering if anyone has a Scottish genealogist they would recommend that I could hire to do some research on a possible child of my grandmother's (likely born in Glasgow)?

The person I am looking for was born too recently to post any details about. On ScotlandsPeople I can't do a search on the child's first name and mother's maiden name only, which is the only info I have. Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this search? I am in the United States so am unable to visit archives in Scotland.

Thanks!
Orr, Duncan, Thom, Wilson - Glasgow/Lanark
Greenaway, Buchanan, Orr, Leckie, Williamson - Larbert/Drymen/Denny, Stirling
Graham, Cameron, Duncan - Perth
Fairlie/Fairley - location??

Hello Susanna,
Have you tried doing an Advanced Search with the first name only and then the mother's maiden name in the Filter Search Results box? If the maiden name is in the search results, then it should be searchable. But maybe I'm missing something here...

Best wishes,
Sarah

Only problem would be that if the name is something along the lines of "Janet" with mother's surname "Smith" or similar, then you would not know if you had found the correct one or not as the list would be too long. One of those things that you could narrow down on the spot with an address (pity it is Glasgow, so lots of registration disctricts to choose from rather than a more rural setting), precise date of birth, by a cross ref. with known siblings, or mother's occupation or whatever, but not from the online indices.

It may be that if one of our members was going to the Mitchell or the Scotlands People Centre for their own research purposes in the near future that they could perhaps have a look for you if given furhter details by PM.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Susanna,

Searching for a child by surname and mother's maiden surname in the SP Centre or any of its outposts only works from about 1927/1928 onwards, and 1855 (and some 1856-1860). The mother's maiden surname is only indexed for these years. It is on the wish-list to have that part of the index extended, but with the limited resources at New Register House and other priorities, it will be a long time before it happens.

Otherwise anyone at the SP Centre would have to trawl through many records to search for results for you.

All the best,

AndrewP
