Mannofield Inn around Aberdeen
Does anyone know where Mannofield Inn was in the Aberdeen Area? I presume it was at Mannofield (west of the city centre) but where exactly? Also, does anyone know where I might be able to find a picture of it or at least a detailed enough plan to show its exact location. The reason I am interested is that my gt gt grandfather Robert Smith with wife Euphemia Milne and three chidren were living there in 1851.

If this is the place then it’s 2nd mile stone, Deeside road.
The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, February 17, 1847.

Dwelling House, Floors, Shops, Bakehouse, and Public House, to be let. …………..
“The well-known PUBLIC HOUSE, at Mannofield, (2nd mile stone, Deeside Road). There is an extensive business carried on, and the excellent locality will command an increasing trade. There is an acre of Land and other premises let along with the House.”
The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, February 3, 1858
Public House at Mannofield to be let.
The house and land there, occupied by Mrs Beattie, with an acre of land.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks Alan.
That seems to fit in both location and date wise. I must try and find out where that milestone physically is / was.

Re: Mannofield Inn around Aberdeen
It would appear to have been in the vicinity of Craigton Road and Cranford Road.
Have a look at the 6 inch OS at http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16 ... FFFFFFFFFF
and the 25 inch at http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid= ... &layers=BT .
The 6 inch is georeferenced and you can use the slider on the top left to see a modern map.

Re: Mannofield Inn around Aberdeen
Thanks a lot Eric.
Interesting but the maps don't show the church at Mannofield (so presumably they pre-date that), yet the Inn appears already gone, though from the milestone we can locate it? I am hoping to get up there in the spring and see if the milestone is still physically there.

Hi Ron,
I think I have the right section of road here on Google Maps and I can see no sign of the milestone. See what you think.

All the best,

Yes Andrew that does look the right place, assuming its on the south side of the road, which seems to be the case from the larger scale OS map. Looks like there may have been some recent redevelopment there too?

Re: Mannofield Inn around Aberdeen
Slightly off topic - I found it rather sad when Australia converted to metric weights and measures (some time in the 1970s), that the mile posts were almost instantly removed. We were left with other reminders of the imperial measures with innumerable 4 mile creeks and 6 mile lanes. Perhaps there may be some other landmark based on the distance that may help to find the location.ronpsmith wrote:Thanks Alan.

Greetings.
A date that recall is 10/7/1967 for New Zealand, but am not sure about Australia. Google would quickly tell you.

PS - I live very handy to a road called Tenfoot Road. When the local land was drained by hand over 100 years ago, the drain was ten foot wide and ten foot deep, and the drain bank cleanings became the safest way from point A to point B to travel, hence Tenfoot Road.

Re: Mannofield Inn around Aberdeen
Not all Australian milestones have gone the way of the Dodo.
At the kerb in front of the house where I was born there was a mile stone marked G51. That was the distance in miles along the old highway to the next significant town on the way to the big city. I just checked on street view and it’s still there and has much better survived the ravages of time than I have.
It’s about two feet in height and at the side of a busy suburban road and it’s a wonder it hasn’t been knocked over or stolen.
All the best,
Alan
