Greetings,
Can anyone help me with information about Seedhill School in Paisley? My g/g/grandfather taught there from about 1815 to 1853. In the mid 1830's it was taken over by the Paisley Educational Association, there is a report on the "re-opening" in the Paisley paper of the time, but apart from that I can find nothing else about the school.
Cheers
Graham

Hello Graham,
I’ve only managed to find a few scraps.
The school is mentioned in The New Statistical Account, published 1837.

Here’s a teacher at 7 Seedhill in the 1838-39 Directory, is he yours? (middle of page 57)

There are more Paisley Directories here. http://archive.org/search.php?query=pai ... pe%3Atexts
The school had completely disappeared by the time this History of Paisley was published in 1909. (middle of page 447) http://archive.org/stream/historyofpais ... 6/mode/2up
All the best,
Alan

Re: Seedhill School , Paisley
Greetings Alan,
Thanks for the information, much appreciated. The Archibald Muir mentoned in the Fowlers Directory is my g/g/grandfather. I've found him listed from the early 1830'3 through to 1853/54. He died in 1853 and was buried in the Gaelic cemetery. I did look for the Seedhill address 3 years ago when we were in the UK, but nothing of course .
I believe there is a reference to the school in a book entitled "Schools in Paisley before 1872" by W.J. McKechin and published by the Renfrew Local History Forum.
The Commercial Directories are a gold mine of information.
Cheers
