Great-great-granfather newspaper article

Post by Sviginak » Fri Oct 18, 2013 11:51 pm

My G-g-gf had a newspaper article written about him in the Perthshire Peoples Journal on August 8, 1931. As a Perthshire volunteer he had attended the famous "Wet Review" of volunteers in Edinburgh, where Queen Victoria attended, and the article focused on a fifty year reunion. What are the chances this is on microfiche or film or somehow available digitally? thanks

Hello Sviginak
[TS_welcome]
Someone with more knowledge about this type of thing should come along and hopefully send you in the right direction.
Have you tried googling for the "Perthshire Journal"?
Or had a look in the local library (if you live in the area)

Thanks for replying, Stewie. I did some googling but didn't see anything promising. I was hoping the People's Journal name had changed and someone here might know a little about that. A little more info about me. My great-grandfather James Low (born Dundee) came to America, and his wife Jane Falconer McClean/Low (born Monikie) and four children (including my grandmother) followed in early 1915. My gggf Robert McClean, long of Forfar, was the Volunteer that participated in the Wet Review of 1881. I have a copy of the article that is partially unreadable, probably from a copy machine many years ago. I will be retiring in a couple years and hope to visit Scotland and perhaps run into some relatives. My grandmother was seven when she emigrated and she spoke fondly of her memories of Scotland. Since my wife got a subscription with Ancestry.com, I have become interested in my Scottish heritage,.... and here I am. Well, actually I am in Alaska at the moment.

Hi Sviginak.

My thoughts are the place to start is the A K Bell Library in Perth. Their list of newspaper archives can be viewed at:

http://www.pkc.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=14368&p=0

Near the bottom of page 1, it lists: Peoples Journal for Perth and Stirling (1868-1950) NP Microfilm

That is the nearest match to the Perthshire Peoples Journal that you name.

See also http://www.pkc.gov.uk/localstudies

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi,

If you look up the National Library of Scotland, there is a project to Microfilm Scottish newspapers, NEWSPLAN2000.

http://www.nls.uk/about-us/working-with ... n-scotland follow this link select 'P' from the list and mid way down you will see that Peoples Journal for Perth is listed.

The idea though appears to be to consult the films in the library, but maybe the library might look it up for you or some kind soul maybe able to get a copy of the article whilst visiting the Library?

Follow the link to the NEWSPLAN main page to find a contact us link

Hope this helps.

John

Just a follow up, Colin was able to get a pdf of the scanned newspaper article from the Perth People's Journal. A quality sscan, but they never removed the paper from the bound book before scanning, and the left hand edge of the page was mangled, which was where my article was. Buggered up the picture of old gggf, and the first few letters of each row of text in the column were gone. Close, but no cigar....

Hi Sviginak

I will be going into Perth in the next two weeks. I can call in at the AK Bell and will try to get them to do a better photocopy for you - unless you get a better/quicker offer before that. Can scan it and send it if you give me your email address on a pm.

Please let me know exactly what it is you want, preferably the date and page in the Perth people's Journal.

Regards

Lorna
