New Year

Post by Arthur » Tue Dec 31, 2013 7:06 pm

Amazingly, I seemed to get here first! A little verse for Hogmanay

Talking Scot and counting bones
Looking under ancient stones
Hunting names and places far
Will the next one be a star?
Places lost and places found
Will the next time come around?
Who will help me find my dad?
So many names to drive me mad
Who will help me?
Who will say?
Will it take another day?
If I find yours, will you find mine?
If not, I’ll try another time

I wish you now a Good New Year
For those we lost, a silent tear
For those we find, a drawing near
When history reveals itself
And old times come anew.
Arthur

Very appropriate poem! May we all find at least one elusive ancestor in 2014! [raise-glass]

I'm surprised the Australian members haven't come in to celebrate yet (maybe they're still passed out in bed). It's an hour later here than in Scotland, but still not New Year's Day yet.

Here's to all [cheers]

Thank you Arthur, for posting your poem for all to read and appreciate!

It expresses very well the feelings we all recognize. Even though those folk may be long gone, it surprises me no end, what it feels like to discover them.

Happy New Year to all at TalkingScot, wherever you are [cheers]

Here's one Aussie...Happy New Year all!

It's 9am January 1st 2014 here as I write. I'm one that usually comes to TS not long after the bells, but I didn't get into the celebration mood last night as I'd picked up some sort of tummy bug, and felt quite under the weather. I'm still waiting to see if it's still with me or not.

Enjoy your celebrating wherever you are!

HAPPY NEW YEAR from down under.

Well we are the first to see the new day, but you are correct it is now 11 hours in for me. My excuse, slept in this morning, can not have too many late nights. Body does not like it. The other night I cleared emails before retiring - big mistake - as a reply from the UK had a big find for my current research [for others unfortunately] and it was 2am before I hit the sack, after processing the information received and informing people all over the world.

The Gentleman had gone out of his way, to visit a local UK library close to my 1880's research area, and said they were unable to help much, but then attached a copy of a hand written letter written in 1883 by one of my subjects. I assumed he got it from the library, but no it turned out that he spotted it one day, and decided to add it to his collection of local items of historic interest. Now I’m able to supply him info about how that extended family faired after emigration to New Zealand, and he is helping us find Northern English info re the family pre emigration.

So in the words of a colleague here’s hoping in 2014 we will be -

GOING GLOBAL – Bigger – Brighter & Better

Cheers,

Alan SHARP
