Police Investigation Record

Post by OzScot » Tue Jan 21, 2014 11:25 am

My grandfather died as a result of an accident in a Glasgow tenement on 2nd January 1944. Only 'sketchy' details were ever passed on to me by my late father, who immigrated alone from Glasgow to Australia when he was 17 years old.

Would anyone know whether it is possible to obtain police investigation records of incidents that occurred long ago (70 years in this case)?

Regards
Ken Maxwell

Hi Ken

Have you tried a search for his name on the National Archives of Scotland catalogue? That may turn up something if the documentation fro the case has survived and is stored there.

Best wishes
Lesley

Do you have his Death Certificate from Scotlands People? Is there an RCE on it?

The Glasgow Herald is online but there appears to have been a shortage of newsprint and a surplus of war news.

In most Scottish Forces the policy was to keep records for 6,7 or in some rare cases, 10 years before destroying them.

Thanks for all your responses.

I have the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE), obtained from the General Register Office for Scotland, which provides some basic information on my grandfather's accident, causing death several days later.

However, I suppose I was hoping to find a more detailed report about the circumstances of his death, likely contained in some sort of police report. Unfortunately, it seems that such police records were probably destroyed long ago.

In regards newspaper articles at the time (accident occurred in late December 1943), with WW2 well underway, very little local Glasgow news was included.

Also, I tried the National Archives of Scotland catalogue, but found it difficult to search.

Ken

Hi Ken

If you can give us the name of your Grandfather we may be able to help you find more, if there is any mention of the accident out there.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

My grandfather's name was John McLean Maxwell, who resided at 18 Vermont Street, Glasgow and died in Victoria Infirmary on 2nd January 1944. I understand the accident occurred at his place of residence several days before he died.

Kind regards,
Ken
