Hyndman/Kennedy ancestors

Post by ssbillings » Wed Jan 07, 2015 4:07 pm

Hi,
I am researching my great-great-great grandmother, Jane Hyndman, who was born in the late 1790s and married Samuel Kennedy, born 1790. I believe they lived in Ballymoney in County Antrim. They had 6 children, Edward, James, Jane, Samuel, William, and Mary. They emigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1830s. I am very interested in tracing Jane Hyndman's ancestors back to Scotland. I have not been able to find information on either Jane or her husband, Samuel Kennedy.

Rev Park’s census of Ballymoney in 1817 has a Samuel and Jean Kennedy living in Culdoo townland. They were husband & wife and had no children, which could suggest they were recently married. Jean and Jane are interchangeable names in Ireland and Scotland. So perhaps that’s your couple.

By 1825 the only Kennedy household in Culdoo, listed in the tithe applotments, is headed by Neal Kennedy, indicating Samuel had left.

The only Hyndman family in that census were in the townland of Eden. Alexander and his wife Jeallis (sic) and their 2 sons William & Charles. Perhaps that was Jane’s family?

Griffiths Valuation for 1861 lists a John Kennedy in Culdoo Upper. He was on plot 21 which was a farm, outbuildings and 15 acres of land. That’s probably the same farm that is mentioned in the 1817 census. That farm is on the modern Lislagan Rd. The revaluation records show that that the farm changed hands in 1864 from John Kennedy to Robert Campbell.

You don’t say what denomination your Kennedys were. I’ll guess that they were Presbyterian since that is by far the most common denomination in that area. Ballymoney 1st Pres church has baptisms from 1751 to 1771 and from 1817 onwards. Marriages only start in 1817.

There’s a couple of deaths you could look at. John Kennedy died Ballymoney 23.6.1867 est year of birth 1811, and 25.8.1868 est year of birth 1835. Either might be the JK from Culdoo. You can view the death certs on-line for £2 each on the GRONI site (use the search death registrations option).

You say that you hope to trace the family back to Scotland. I doubt you’ll be able to achieve that as the records for the relevant years (ie 1600s to early 1800s) just don’t exist. Neither in Ireland nor in Scotland.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll follow up on your suggestions. Yes, they were Presbyterians.
