Virtual Volumes on Scotlands People

Post by WilmaM » Mon Mar 15, 2021 11:22 am

I've just logged into Scotlands people this morning and found a big change.
Something called Virtual Volumes.

It was taking over a quarter of the right hand of my screen on every page I was on.
Something about searching for records not indexed by personal name.

I did click the link to 'Find out how to use Virtual Volumes' and Kirk Session records were mentioned.
Along with link to Scotlands Places and a list of thing not found in virtual volumes.
I couldn't go any further as a large header proclaimed

.

Of course as soon as I came into Talking Scot to ask about it all - all the details have vanished [ except the access denied bit =; ] and the pages have returned to normal.

I'm curious as to what may be afoot over yonder...
And if it's a new feature could somebody point out that it's scrunching the other search fields up too much!

Update:
SP on Facebook posted this message:
ScotlandsPeople will undergo essential maintenance between 18.30 and 20.00 GMT today, Monday 15 March.
The site may be unavailable for brief periods during this time. We apologise for the inconvenience.
So I guess somebody forgot to lock the door behind them when they arrived at work this morning :- !
and all may be revealed this evening...

Well Ladies it looks as if it's here!

Front page has a section
NEW - Search for Kirk Session and other church court records

That link takes us to :
In Virtual Volumes you can view digital copies of historical records in the care of National Records of Scotland that are not indexed by personal name. Records currently available are mainly those of kirk sessions and other church courts. To find out more, read our guides on how to use Virtual Volumes, kirk session records and church court records.

a. Volume search
Search for a specific volume by reference or search all volumes by date range.

b. Record creator search
Search for records of a kirk session, presbytery or other court or institution.

c. Place search
Search for all records relating to a place such as a parish, county or city.
Farewell - I'm off down these rabbit holes, I may be some time...

I need to dig out my list of fatherless children that I couldn't look up until I could get into the Records Office in Edinburgh. =D> And guess who is luckily on holiday next week, timing couldn't be better for me =D> :- \:D/

But what will we do when we bring down the server with demand
