Rosehall Street

Post by Jack » Tue Nov 21, 2006 9:24 pm

Hi Jackie,
Rosehall Street is alas no more - the M8 motorway now runs over it.
But here's where it was; if you go to -
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... plans.html

Select Glasgow [1892-4]
Select centre square
Select VI.6.24 (3rd down - 4th from left)
Just to the right of middle at the top of the map is Rosehall Street
For the rest of it - still on centre square
Select VI.6.19 (2nd down - 4th from left)
Rosehall Street runs NE from the bottom - again to the right of middle.

Hi again Jackie

If you know the number of the house your ancestors lived in on Kirkland St I will gladly check for you to see if it is still standing and I will photograph it for you. Don't get too excited though as the entire right hand side of the street was demolished and new houses built but the left hand side is still old tenements so you just might be lucky.

Just give me a shout when you're ready

Cheers

Oh Annette you're my new friend for life. The address is 113 Kirkland St. I have a census sheet from my father's files that shows the Marshall family, including my grandmother at 1 year old, living there. THANK YOU! I'll have to keep in touch with you so when we make our momentous trip I can thank you in person! - Jackie

NEW YEAR RITUALS

My first job when I left school was working in THE CLYDESDALE & NORTH OF SCOTLAND BANK in Duke Street and they did their Annual Balance on the 31st DECEMBER

We did a trial balance a couple of days before but you could guarantee that something would go wrong. You were lucky to get out the door before 10.30pm. This was in the days of hand written ledgers and when something was out by sixpence or more no one could leave.

My sister-in-law also worked in a bank, at Parkhead Cross, and two years running my brother only just managed to get her home in time for the bells. On both occasions they had been less than 5/- (old shillings) out but weren't allowed to leave till it was found!

Apparently, a couple of years before they met, the staff actually celebrated the New Year at their desks because the books hadn't balanced to the tune of a whopping 13/6.

And, NO, I'm not even going to try to work out how much that is in decimal :?

NEW YEAR RITUALS

Mary

There was no such thing as OVERTIME in the bank.

When I was a junior. I had to leave home, catch a bus into George Square go into the bank HQ pick up a bag for our Branch, get a bus back out to Duke Street, everyday you had to stay until the ledger balanced, so if one teller was out we all had to stay until the mistake was found, then I had to go back into the Head Office with the bag and then catch the bus home.
It didn't matter how late you were there was no overtime.
Actually I don't think I knew what overtime was.
