Russel, I wonder if some of the TS members from overseas know what a Room & Kitchen was. Or a Single end. The Lavvy on the Sters. Nae Bathroom. Down to the Steamie for a bath on Saturday or Sunday

I was lucky I lived in a 2 bedroom semi detached with a garden but when we went to Bridgeton or Springburn to visit I thought those kids had much more fun than me.

Maybe we should have a thread called "Tenement life" so that folk can put in reminiscences about their experience of being sent, top and tailed with their cousins to sleep in the 'box bed' on a visit to grannie; or the ignominy of standing in the 'jaw-box' sink to have a wash down when you were sure you were old enough to go to the Baths like the rest of the family.

Should have known Edinburgh didn't have closes, too posh for that.

Had an Aunt & Uncle who lived in Dalkeith road, they even had a car, very posh by my standards. They never took us for a drive but did let us sit in it when we went to visit, not often, they also said Grace at the table usually got my fingers slapped for not remembering and their daughters went to, I think the school was called Gillespies.
Did Edinburghers go Jiggin' or was that to infra dig for them?

My Grannie lived in Easter Road and she lived in a stair
Nane o yer wallie closes. Mind you they still had a box bed in the parlour and a coal cupboard in the kitchen. Right next to the space where another bed would have been normally.
Black leaded grate where she did all her cooking.
Mangle in the corner next to the sink.
Wallie dugs on the mantleshelf.
Spills in a spill box next to the fire.
Camphor balls in the wardrobe to keep the moths away. It widnae (sorry wouldn't do!) to have the fox wrap damaged now would it ?

Glasgow closes always had a window on the half landing. Her stair had a great big skylight instead.

Thinking about it only Auld Reekie had closes and pends. Stairs were to show you lived in the newer parts of town.
