WASHING CLOTHES

Post by wini » Wed Jul 19, 2006 12:16 pm

AND did anyone ever have to use a washing board, when the washing machine packed in?

I remeber during the 1940's I used to spend my summer hoildays with an Aunt & Uncle in Tranent. Uncle Tom worked in the coal mine on constant backshift so he could help with the household chores and garden

Their Washing Machine had an agitator with a handle that came through the lid and Uncle Tom had to push this back and forth to make it work. No electric washing machine in this household and they had 10 children, although by the time I went there there was only five at home

Oh for the "Good Old Days"

I had 2 babies in 1959 and well remember trying to get nappies dried, If they didn't dry I had to hang them on the Pulley in the kitchen, if that wasn't bad enough if the weather was bad I had sheets etc. on the Pulley
Got smacked in the face may a time with a wet sheet or towel.
