Thanks, Jean. Maybe you could answer me something. I hate putting my email address on things and getting spammed, but what got me registering was that I saw a query about a name on a marriage record, and I realised that I know a lot about the bride's family (wich seems to be the new bit of the ancestry of the poster) I tried sending a private mesage, but it seems to just sit there in my outbox and not turn up in my sent box. How do I actually send the thing?
Help much appreciated!

Welcome to TalkingScot!
How long ago did you send the private message to the TS member? You've just signed in as our newest member, so you may need to give it some time for the member to pick up the message. They may live in a totally different time zone then Scotland. Once the member opens the message it will then leave your "outbox" and move to your "sent box"
Regards

Aha! It was just a wee while ago. I didn't realise it wouldn't go "out" till it was picked up. Thanks!
As to e - I thought maybe I had registered here before with a username I often use, but I had a different ISP and email address then, and I couldn't recall the password. So I just ?re-? registered with a new username without thinking too hard about it.
OK, OK, I confess: I'm a smout whose name starts with an e, so inevitably I'd get called "wee e" now and then when I was younger; so it just seemed natural to someone as lazy as I am to use it.

I couldn't resist posting on this topic - it brought back so many memories! My granny never made porridge in a drawer, but I remember her being absolutely appalled when those little single-serving sachets of porridge oats came out in the shops. She was adamant that you didn't get half the waste if you made it in the big pot once a week! She used to do the same thing with a sort of mutton-and potato stew once a week, and I swear it tasted better on tuesday than it did on monday, better again on wednesday and so on!
As for cold mornings, my granddad apparently had the ultimate solution to that. He worked as a police man, usually on the night shift, and when he'd come in in the morning, he went straight upstairs, tipped my dad out of bed and stole his warmth!
To this day my dad can't sleep past 7am!
