Muckle Harvest.....

Post by Scozzie » Wed Oct 12, 2005 11:56 am

Has anyone ever heard of the Muckle Harvest affair of 1847 in Orkney?

A Google on "muckle harvest orkney 1847" or "muckle harvest orkney" should keep you occupied for few minutes, but I don't know if you'll find anything about a "Muckle Harvest affair of 1847"

Hi Davie - I tried that, got lots of interesting bits about Harvests. I've heard a vague story that "something" happened at the Harvest in 1847 that was the cause of many people emigrating. I don't know if it was a bad harvest or if there were some "goings-on"!

There was lots about the custom of a "Muckle Supper" in connection with the harvest........

Try an email to the Orkney FHS, see http://www.talkingscot.com/links/fhs-links.htm for contact details.

Thanks David (sorry I called you Davie earlier  ). I'm on a mailing list for Orkney, and saw the question there, thought I'd help out. If I find out anything I'll let you know. Some of my ancestors came from Orkney - I can only trace a few of them - wondering if some of my lot emigrated. I think some of my ancestors dropped in from another planet.......... and others have gone back!

Nae prob at a' re Davie, - in email and DG terms I once was, not that I am, but just some early keyboard errors many moons ago - look at the location on the standard UK QWERTY keyboard of "d" and "e" - and decided to stick with it as my email/DG moniker, but when a real Davie joined TS a wee while ago, decided to go back to my "proper" name

PS In terms of non-harvest related matters that could have come to a head at a harvest supper, 1847 was only 4 years after The Disruption that led to the formation of the Free Kirk which led to massive splits among previously close communities. I could give you a good response were you to ask about the success or otherwise of the Free Kirk in most other parts of Scotland, but have to confess that I haven't the faintest idea about the situation in Orkney and Shetland ...........

Thanks muchly DaviD! That makes sense - the church bit. Considering my lot (Clark) are supposed to have got their name because they were clerks to the monks on Orkney ...... (way waaaaaaaaaay back). I've found (maybe) Monks, Mormons, Gospel Hall, Presbyterians, Bahai, 7th Day Adventists, Calathumpians........ what next??

Calathumpians ?!?!?

Google gives lots of hits but not one that I can see on a quick scan that includes a definition for them........

I think the Calathumpians are a breakaway group of the Wheelbarrow religion.......... they go when they're pushed.
