 This was the nickname that my Dad & his cousin Jackie gave to my Granny. They would run home with some news only to have my Granny give them chapter & verse with her interpretation of the facts" I always thought he had shifty eyes" -one poor neighbour being "lifted" for theft.
She knew which man was visiting which woman when her man was on the nightshift, which neighbour had stuck his head in the gas oven after"interfering" with his Grandchild & that he might not have stuck it in the oven voluntarily. She knew who had their "name in the window" before it went up-never her she would died before she owed anybody a shilling.
Anyway one day my Dad & "Uncle" Jackie decided to get one up on her.
"Hey ma that ---- has been sending messages to the Gerries"-this was during WW2.This was in the morning before school.
On their return the "Polis" were questioning this poor Man & my Granny telling my Dad & Jackie
"I found out he was sending signals to the Germany & he was flashing lights to the planes to guide them on their way.His name is no---- its --(something Germanic sounding).
Well Dad & Jackie had to come clean but I never heard the outcome of it all but thats how my Granny got her nickname & I reckon she would have been a great tabloid hack- the truth no barrier to a good story.
