In today's Scotsman, a claim from a forthcoming TV series that 1 in 5 Scots have Iraqi blood - the remaining 80% being descended from bands of hunter-gatherers who came from England and northern Europe after the Ice Age. Read more about it at:

Hello Marie,
I shall look out for Jimmy el-Farooq McCurdie then.

No joking folks, you wouldn't believe the etymology of some Scottish surnames
And then there's the origin of the original Celtic church in Scotland, believed by scholars to have derived more from the Coptic church in northern Africa and countries in the Middle East including Iraq............. where, despite the predominance of the Moslem faith, there is still a significant Christian Coptic church with 100,000s of adherants.
(It was reported somewhere a few months ago that the bishops of this church approached the American military authorities to point this out and ask for recognition, but that they were met by complete disbelief that there were any Christians in Iraq, whose ancestors, obviously, would have been there several centuries before the Moslem faith was founded..............)
So work that one out

Re: ancestors
Hello Davie,

And just what do you think was the origin, based on migration from further East, of a proportion of the population of Iraq involving certain "Currie" loving regionssporran wrote:Hello Davie,

As a descendant of one of the original iraqi-scot family lines, I must protest at all the very bad jokes in this posting.

Hi
Wonder if I am one of the 20% as it seems probable that some of my ancestors were called Assur and the temple of Assur was threatened with flooding by a dam project in Iraq. How that fits with their being Jewish I don't know but maybe Davie can enlighten me. Anyway they're certainly middle eastern.
