Skidging School

Post by JS » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:35 am

I was just on the BBC Voices website and it said that people in Paisley called skipping school skidging.

I used to stay there, but don't remember anyone calling it that. Thought it was one of those weird Greenock words, I lived there too, that no one else seemed to use, like slice. Anyways, was just wondering if anyone else knew?

Hello JS

Welcome to TalkingScot. I'm in the US myself, but those in the UK should be able to answer your question soon.

Regards

In 1970s and 1980s Edinburgh, it was "skiving".

Can't say i've ever heard it called that either - maybe just a term used by a particular school?
Like Wini in Glasgow, we at the old Camphill in Paisley just called it doggin'.
And many of those doggers could be found in the "Manacca" billiard hall in Orr St,
which was the nickname of "The Working Men's Abstainers Club".
(which was a bit of a misnomer on two accounts  ).

My scotland

Post by wini » Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:34 am

I went to School in Dennistoun so dogging was quite wide spread by the looks of it .
Skiving sounds quite Posh Andrew, it would be if it was used in Edinburgh
Thats where the posh members of my family came from. They even had a car, which they would let me sit in when we went to visit. They never drove me anywhere, maybe they really couldn't afford the petrol.
I am just trying to stir up some inter city rivalry.

It was "skiving" in Fife too!

Best wishes
