Dobbies Loan

Post by wini » Sat Jan 28, 2006 11:00 am

Were reminiscing with Glasgow friends

My husband and friend served their apprenticeship as Joiners & Carpenters with John Cochrane's in Dobbies Loan in the 1950's

Where did the name Loan come from and what does it mean?

I don't think I knew of any other "Loans" in Glasgow

Hi wini

In my home town we had a street that was simply called "The Loan".

My book of Burns gives the meaning of "Loan" as "lane" or "strip of grass between fields, used as a milking place"

Best wishes

Catriona

Thanks Catriona,

It must have been a long time ago that there was any strip of grass in Dobbies Loan.

Keep posting I just love the name Catriona

:) My father was a carter in 1920 to 1942. He stabled his horse in Dobbies Loan. I think loan is lane and I always thought it was dobbies loan because my dad stabled his horse there. Was there also a sawmill in that area? if so i had three cousins who were all apprenticed sawyers and one went to Aussie after the 2nd war, he is still there I am glad to say.
