Change of name Bogie to Boag.....

Post by Annieboag » Fri Mar 03, 2006 3:56 pm

My husband's g grandfather changed the family name. On his death certificate it says formerley known as ...Bogie.I am sooooo grateful that he did this, but would love to know why. Is there any where I can find out if it was done officially?
Did Bogie have the same associations late 1800s early 1900s?Surely you wouldnt be embarassed after 5 generations of this name
Any ideas or thoughts gratefuly received

A bogie in Scotland is a wheeled vehicle dearly beloved & usually made by young boys& girls of a certain era.
If something happened to interrupt a street game when I was a child eg somebody got called in for tea. Then the cry would go up "The games a bogie"Never knew where it originated but most 40+ who played out as children will recognise this call.
Never heard the word "bogie" in reference to nasal waste ,in Clydebank it was called "snotters" but never in front of your Mum!
Why he would change it to something so similiar???

Thanks Joette I never knew that.

I've no idea why he chose something so similar.
I'm not sure if his father William Bogie or he changed the name because they both start using the name at similar times. We know the name changed before 1893 because William signed his mother's death certificate "Boag" .
My first thoughts were that something shameful happened in the family -not discovered it yet .... Too early for a c. objector.. I'm flunmmoxed but consumed by curiosity.

Incidentally if any Bogies are reading this I mean no offence :)

Just over the hill from where I live there are some place names from the same root.

Boagstown

Boxton [ in one map it looks like Boston]

Bogo

and the road is known locally as Bogston Road.

These names often get 'changed' through time and the varying spellings used depending on the area.

If it was done officially then there would be a record in the Court of Sessin, but that's unlikely as it has always been the case in Scots Law, that as long as there was/is no criminal or fraudulent intent, then someone can call themselves by whatever name they like !!
