West Lothian Council

Post by Jean Jeanie » Fri Feb 18, 2005 4:25 pm

Everybody raise a glass to West Lothian Council :D

I e mailed them this morning asking the simple question "Where can I find the lair books for Uphall Cemetery?"

A couple of hours later back came the reply County Buildings Linlithgow. Phone no and address supplied.

Fifteen minutes later an E mail from Donna who is the Cemeteries Admin Officer for West Lothian. She asked me for names and dates of death for those I was looking for.

Thirty minutes later =D> Not only the lair numbers of the 4 couples I asked for (grandparents and great grandparents) but details of all others interred in these lairs. Six more ancestors I had never heard of.

Well impressed.

Jean

Edited. Make that 7 ancestors. Found the first one's death(date given to me by W.L. Council and he has a different mother to all the others. Great Grandad was married twice.

"Well impressed" !! - Has to be the understatement of the DG to date :!:

Being my "home" local authority, - I stay a few miles away from Linlithgow in Livingston, I'm also well impressed =D> My council tax (effectively a local tax) is actually producing a valuable service to the genealogical community.

It's a shame I'm not searching for anyone in West Lothian! (Yet ...)

There's more.

I asked if there was a plan of the cemetery to help me find the lairs. Told Donna we were planning a visit to Scotland at the end of the month.

Reply received this morning. Yes there is a plan of the sections, but not of the individual lairs. She is sending me the plan in the post.

She is also arranging for the lairs to be marked prior to our visit.

What a service =D>

Well impressed is certainly an understatement.

Might I suggest we pass the compliment on to West Lothian Council.

Service deserves recognition.

I have also had assistance from the West Lothian Council. I had sent a question about obituaries as I thought I might go to visit and do some research myself. I had a reply back from Sylvia Cavanaugh offering to make copies and send them by post to me ! Very kind offer indeed. The copies arrived here a week ago and I've just posted a thank you card back to her.

Hi dstew

If it is the cemeteries dept you want then the e mail no is Donna.Johnston@westlothian.gov.uk

Anything else you want concerning West Lothian, then have a look at their website www.westlothian.gov.uk

Jean Jeannie thanks for this post - I contacted Donna Johnston as I'm visiting Linlithgow this weekend and want to find some graves in Uphall - she came back quick as a flash and gave me the info I wanted, the others in the lair and a suggestion for another person buried before the cemetery opened. She is also sending a map and having the lair marked for me.

Doesn't it just make your day when someone does their job well, and then goes the extra mile :D

I intend to convey my appreciation to this lady's boss.
