A wee bit of poesy

Post by Thrall » Sun May 07, 2006 2:48 am

Chust te show a´m still alive, a wee bit af poesy; apologies if it´s bin poasted before:

He's five year auld, he's aff tae the schuil
Fermer's bairn wi a pincil an a rule
His teacher scoffs whan he says "hoose"
" The word is house, you silly little goose"
He tells his ma whan he gits back
He saw a "mouse" in an auld cairt track
His faither lauchs fae the stackyaird dyke
"Yon's a MOOSE ye daft wee tyke"

Owerwird:

Listen tae the teacher, dinna say dinna
Listen tae the teacher, dinna say hoose
Listen tae the teacher, ye canna say maunna
Listen tae the teacher, ye maunna say moose

He bit his lip an shut his mooth
Whit ane coud he trust for truith
He teuk his burden ower the hill
Tae auld gray Geordy o the mill
"An did thay mock thoo for thee tongue
Wi thaim sae auld an ye sae young?
Thay warna makkin a fuil o ye
Thay war makkin a fuil o thaimsels ye see"

Say hoose tae the faither, house tae the teacher
Moose tae the fermer, mouse tae the preacher
Whan yer young it's weel for you
Tae "do in Rome as Romans do"
But whan ye growe an ye are auld
Ye needna dae as ye are tauld
Dinna trim yer tongue tae suit yon dame
That scorns the langage o her hame

Than teacher thocht that he wis fine
He keepit in stap, he steyed in line
Faither says that he wis grand
He spak his ain tongue like a man
An whan he growed an made his chyce
He chose his Scots, his native vyce
An A chairge ye tae dae likewice
Spurn yon puir misguidit cries

Little more to be said, sorry no credits,

Thrall

Later today; a wee Google proved the author of the above to be Nancy Nicholson, the title, "Listen Tae The Teacher".

Very good Thrall, never heard it before.BUT! Reminds me of my school days.

Both my mum and dad used a lot of the Auld Scots Words.

In school one day, teacher asked for a sentence with the word fire in
it.Eagerly I put my hand up and said,Please miss There was a lum on fire in
our street last night.Shock horror  Now,she said, thats just the sort of
reply I didn't want.The word is CHIMNEY :x
Now I wasn't Stupid,I also knew the word CHIMNEY.
Would it not have been better for teacher to explain to some of the others
that this was the auld scots language :?:

Cheers Nancy.

Hi Nancy

First they tried to suppress the Gaelic - and almost succeded

Then King James Vl & l tried to suppress Auld Scots and hasn't yet managed that.
Governments have tried to order our lives for centuries and received English was yet another way they insisted that teachers forced down our throats. Don't blame the teachers for doing what they were told. Anyway they were the educated class and knew better!!!
Enough of us dropped out of the schooling system or were sufficiently rebellious to want to keep our old ways to make sure the auld tongue didn't die completely.
Now TalkingScot is reminding people of what they almost lost. Its down to (up to?) us to save what's left and maybe add some bits back in :) :)

They'll no scunner us.
