National Anthem for Scotland - new suggestion .....

Post by Fergie » Fri Jun 30, 2006 8:00 pm

Listening to all the debate on TV recently about a suitable national anthem for Scotland. A song by the Corries came to mind (they sang it but I'm not sure if they wrote it - they probably did) called "Scotland will Flourish" I love the words but I'm not so sure about the tune as an anthem. My husband (a folk singer) is in Africa just now visiting projects in Kenya & Tanzania and I can't find the book the song is in. If anyone has the words maybe they could post them as I think it's a cracking song with a cheery tune. I've always liked it but it's not well known.

"Let the Scots be known for their kind hospitality
a hand that is openly proferred to friends
a hard working people proud and unbending
Scotland will flourish and win out in the end"

.....or something like that
and
"let us be rid of those bigots and fools who will not let Scotland live and let live" My memory fails me - I'll away and search for the words or if I was clever find them on the internet. What do you all think?

Thank you Pinkshoes,

Didn't notice the other thread about National Anthems - will put the words on there for some opinions.

Do you frequent the Lade Inn - is it a good folk night - might take a run up sometime. Husband sings lots of the Corries stuff. Did they write it do you know?

Regards,

Fergie

Hi Fergie - sorry don't know anything about the Lade - I found it when I was looking for another song some time ago. This is the address I was looking for earlier - might be interesting for you (no audio of Scotland will Flourish, though).

Think the Corries wrote it but wouldn't swear to it.

Best wishes
