National Anthems .....

Post by StephenB » Sun Jul 02, 2006 4:45 pm

Strikes me as just a wee bit odd that Scotland is searching for a National Anthem when we don't have a lot of sporting use for one and yet our Southern Cousins, who do need one on a bit more frquent basis aren't interested in the subject.
Now that England has rediscovered her own flag isn't it about time they found an anthem as well.
Just a thought.

You haven't been watching the tennis, then, have you? :?:

Said it already and I'll say it again (but with all the words) \:D/ ....

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

0 Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

I've been watching the tennis. Nice to see Andy Murray (a Scot) come so far. Keeping my fingers crossed that he wins the tournament.

I'm still in favour of "Flower of Scotland" as a national anthem.

Sorry to disagree with you emanday, but I just cannot see those words being used as an English Anthem.

As far as i am aware England hasnt rediscovered her own flag its just that now people are fed up of being made to feel ashamed of it and so using it more and more - rightly or wrongly. Personally i dont care. Now The football is over a lot of peoples homes will look a lot neater :!: and at least this time the red dye didnt run when it rained like last time

I also thought we had a perfectly good National Anthem with no need to change it and who honestly knows all the words past the first verse ? why have to learn a new one
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Tracey

May I draw your attention to the last verse

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

I think, perhaps, that this may be one of the reasons why the 'National Anthem' is not everybody's choice.

Agreed Dave

And now it has been taken up as a football chant by a bunch who can't even sing I'm right off it!

(Its all right though they only sing the first verse - or what they know of it.)

I don,t mind Flower of Scotland at times but it's a wee bit slow and I like Caledonia but it's hard to sing (well for me).

Can I suggest one I heard the Corries sing (don't know if they wrote it):

Scotland Will Flourish

Scotland will flourish by the sweat of our labour
the strength of her will and the force of her mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
Hatred corrupts and friendship refines

Let the Scots be a nation o' proud of their heritage
with an eye to the future and a heart to forgive
And let us be rid of those bigots and fools
Who will not let Scotland live and let live

Let us govern our country wisely and fairly
Let each man and woman work wi a will
And Scotland will flourish, secure in the knowledge
That we reap our own harvest and ring our own till

And let us be known for our kind hospitality
a hand that is open, proffered to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive and win out in the end

Well I like it and it's a cheery wee tune. I pester my folk singing husband to sing it more often at gatherings and it usually goes down well.

What do you think,

Fergie

Ps sorry for starting the other thread - didn't see this one the other day!
