What's a "quoye" .....

Post by DavidWW » Mon Jul 03, 2006 8:31 am

A terminological puzzle from the confirmation (probate) and inventory of a 1685 testament (will) ......

In the inventory, between the items relating to 4 kyn (cows) and a colpindach (2yr old heifer) and a stott (bullock, possible also 2yr old), there's an item referring to "tuo [two] quoyes"...............

Any ideas ?

David

Hi David,
Chambers' has Quey / Quoy as - a heifer until she has had a calf.
So maybe those 2 quoyes were just young single girls....

Hi Jack

Many thanks for that, - my faith in the Concise Scots Dictionary has been much decreased :!: :!:
