Gaelic Translation .....

Post by kinsearcher » Sun Jul 09, 2006 9:45 am

It seems relatively simple to get 'online' translations for any number of non-English languages but I'm really finding it hard to get Scots Gaelic translations to English. Has anyone come across something handy? I find loads of dictionaries but they are fine for single words not phrases I feel.
Here's one word I've come across - OGAICHEAN
Thanks,
James.
Ayrshire: CRAIG - (Dalry/Beith/Kilbirnie)
ORR - Kilbirnie
Aberdeenshire: MASSIE, MAITLAND, GERRIE, IRONSIDE, SKENE, CHEYNE, CARDNO
Orkney: SHEARER, MILLER

I did find an online Gaelic Dictionary ....but the word you are looking for is not there:

I hope someone will be able to help.
Best wishes

Thanks for that Lesley. I had in mind one ot those 'type in a word/phrase' and click, to bring up a result. I bet one would be handy to many.

The original I had was N-A-H OGAICHEAN. I know the H could be the little used letter in Gaelic beginning a word. from that dictionary I'm beginning to feel the sense is that of 'youth' in some context or other.
Ah well - more dictionaries I guess.
Thanks again.
James.

Ok - from another source, I have -
Na h-Oganaich is pronounced "na hawkanich" and means The Young Blood.
Easy when one knows eh?
