Hi shrewgirl,

Have you tried Googling?

I keyed in Glen Cinema Disaster, 1929 and a fair few sites came up. Maybe some of these might help answer what you're looking for.

Good luck,

Anne

Hi Shrewgirl, I notice you have posted three different messages about the Glen Cinema disaster and mention that you are doing a project on it at college. You obviously have the names of the children who died as a result of what happened so it is not clear what you are looking for now.

What subject are you studying at college? What form does the project take? Have you to discuss what occured that day? Are you looking into the backgrounds of the children who were present?

Take some time to look at the information out there as I would think the majority of the TS members would only be giving you information they find on the same web sites, let us know if you need more specific information about the era, the way of life etc.

Some times it helps to step back and look at the project remit as it helps you formulate your work. I don't know if this has been said at college but when you study you in effect 'read' the subject, that is you look at all the sources of information available, form new questions in your head and go search some more.

Let us know if we can be of any further help.

Hi Annie

The course I am on ask us to do a project so we could do a presentation on it to get used to using powerpoint.

I got really curious about The Glen Cinema Disaster and wanted to know more. So far I have done well and just want to understand what life was like for them.

thanks for getting back to me

Your best bet then is to google Britain in the 1930's and see what you can come up with. I'm not sure, but the Paisley Museum and Art Gallery may have local newspapers in the archive for this period, certainly if they don't then the Mitchell Library will have (although not specifically Paisley). Newspapers give a good indication of what life was like if you read not only the ads to find out what was new and becoming desirable but also the news items as they will tell of current political issues and local crimes etc through court reports.

Historically Britain was experiencing a depression then when there was little money due to high unemployment. By reading about the times and looking at old photos of the streets you have named the children coming from (again try the Museum) you should be able to build a picture of what life was like for many of them. Why not look at old maps and see how far they came to the cinema that day, remember many of them would walk to town as it would be the norm and also they might only have the admission money and nothing extra.

Good luck with your presentation, Powerpoint is straight forward if you remember you are in charge!

Or no admission money but a "helpful"friend who opened the exit door for them!
I know that there were "geggies" where you could bring jam jars & exchange them for the price of a ticket to the show.
My Dad was a keen cinema goer in the thirties/forties & they're some of his exploits.
Most children went unaccompanied by adults usually an elder sibling, neighbour may have taken you there.Groups of friends would go,remember no TV or Computer games so this was an exciting event for most children.

Hi Louise,

We have PM on this subject, as my aunt was one of the children attending on the day of the disaster, fortunately she was uninjured.

I am curious, have you had any communication from anyone else with a direct link to this disaster?
