I was in the Band of Hope at the United Free Church in Dennistoun. Memories quite vague about it, but I remember the church was near Todd Street just at Edinburgh Road(ish).

Believe it or not I used to be able to say the Pledge without a second thought, but for the life of me I simply cannot remember it now. :oops:

Hi Mary,

You have jogged my memory, my grandmother never smoked swore or drank and she always said she had taken the pledge. I wonder what the pledge was and if it was affiliated to a Scottish church or just to the band of hope, she lived in both Glasgow and Annan.

Hi Audrey,

The Band of hope used to run trips to various places which we always went on. While there was a serious side to it all, these trips were great fun and lots of games and such were organised. My most vivid memory is of the huge wooden trays of sandwich rolls and cakes being unloaded carried on the heads of the "caterers" (usually Beatties Bakery in our case) and the distribution of this bounty across what seemed to a small child, a humungous number of people.

There were groups from many other churches at these "gatherings" so I think it was a temperance organisation that was supported, in its beliefs at least, by the majority of religious organisations of the time. Certainly, most of the other groups held their meetings in church halls as we did.

Each group had a banner and I can only remember the words - "Resist tempation - Be ye steadfast unmoveable".

What can I say - You had to be there? It is certainly one of my great childhood memories.

Ah mind the Band of Hope well, frae Rutherford Church, in Dennistoun.
Guid fun!
And a few hymns flung in.
Everybudy ready?, all join in.

Ask the Saviour to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through

Praise The Lord and pass the tambourine!

Thanks Jean,

I have been trying to find the pledge that people signed or rather the words to it, all good fun.
