On the declension of 'haggis'

Post by jennyblain » Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:19 pm

Having just seen the posts of DWW in various places - and given that I have been too occupied with trying to teach some o thae 'Inglis' doon here a few words:

A possible declension of 'Haggis', given the difficult associations with other Indo-European languages, might be -
(given as nominative vocative accusative genitive dative ablative, singular first)

haggis
haggis
haggem
haggis
haggi
hagge

hagges
hagges
hagges
haggiorum
haggibus
haggibus

Hi Jenny
Oh dear....that takes me back.
Have we to learn this for next week?
(The speed a which I can still decline "puella", "servus" and "arbor" is deeply worrying.... given that I sometimes can't remember other far more inportant things!!)

Best wishes
Lesley

We just have to remember the vocative of "dominus" is domine, hence our word for a teacher "dominie" in the case used when addressing the wretched, or otherwise, man (or woman?)........

Ave all

Does that make haggis a fourth declension noun. I wish I could remember that stuff better. Can still decline mensa and conjugate amo to some extent. Also have fond ? memories of Gaul being divided into three parts and also of Achilles standing in his gleaming armour like a snake which had newly cast its slough. At least I think it was Achilles. I knew I got an ediccation for something.
